006: How to Pursue Your Calling More Than a Blueprint for Your Life with Barry Brown

Leadership Breakthrough

In today’s episode, I’m talking with leadership mentor and consultant, Barry Brown.  Barry has found that the key to his breakthroughs on his journey is being willing to listen, both to those in front of him and to the sense of calling on his life.  Doing so has freed him up to yes to opportunities with confidence, even when not all the pieces of the puzzle make practical sense. Even when there's no neon sign or blueprint.  Be sure to check out the full show notes at thehvidtgroup.com/pursue-your-calling Connect with Bill

Since 1979 when he began his career as a filmmaker, he has been a writer, director and editor. He is best known for his collaborations with Spike Lee, editing some of Lee’s best-known films including Do the Right Thing (1989), Malcolm X (1992), He Got Game (1998), 25th Hour (2002), Inside Man (2006), and BlacKkKlansman (2018), the latter of which earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing at the 91st Academy Awards. As a film director, Brown co-directed the documentary film The War at Home (1979), for which it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and was one of the youngest nominees for the category. Some of his other film directing credits include The Who's Tommy, the Amazing Journey (1993), a documentary film about The Who's Tommy album, and the feature films Winning Girls Through Psychic Mind Control (2002), starring Bronson Pinchot and Son of the South (2020). Brown has also edited music videos for Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Public Enemy and Arrested Development. Barry’s latest feature film, titled, Son of the South was just released on February 8th and is a poignant true story set in Montgomery, Alabama about the life of Bob Zellner, the grandson of a Klansman who must choose which side of history to be on during the Civil Rights Movement. Defying his family and white Southern norms, he fought against social injustice, repression and violence during the civil rights era. On this podcast episode we talk about his career working with Spike Lee as an editor and his most recent project as a director, Son of the South.CONVERSATIONS WITH CHARLIEALL ACCESS + CLIPS + FULL EPISODES + SUBSCRIPTIONhttps://linktr.ee/thepodmatrixFOLLOW us on SOCIAL MEDIAInstagram: @thepodmatrixnyc https://www.instagram.com/thepodmatrixnyc/Linkedin: THEPODMATRIX https://www.linkedin.com/company/thepodmatrix/Facebook: @thepodmatrix

Halfway Home A Bicycle Podcast

Barry and I disappear down many rabbit holes in this episode, his custom built (by him) bespoke bike, recumbents, crank length (who decided 170 - 175mm would work for everyone)? and why commuting on an Ordinary (Penny Farthing) is the 'safe' option. Oh; and those British, European and World titles...It's a long ride, put your comfy shorts on and join us Halfway Home.
