Eric and Bret Weinstein and the End of History

Paul VanderKlay's Podcast

Bret and Eric Weinstein have been on a mission to save the world. As we've seen in the last two videos they want to save humanity which is itself the cause of our crisis. After the Cold War Francis Fukuyama imagined that from then on out it would be Democratic capitalism that brought in the eschaton, but no such luck. The Intellectual Dark Web, or what's left of it after the recession of the first Jordan Peterson wave is trying to have a religious conversation while trying to avoid religion and it isn't working. Religion is the longest continuous conversation on the planet. What might the prophet Isaiah have to say in this? A lot. Bret Weinstein On The Evolutionary Implications Of Technology And Modern Society

Episode artwork
Read more

Today’s guest is Bret Weinstein. Bret is a former Evergreen State College Professor at the centre of a massive controversy and a tort claim (which he has just settled) surrounding a day of absence at the University, which you can read more about below. We got into numerous fascinating discussions about the nature and problems with the extreme left-right divide, the evolutionary implications of technology and modern society, the evolutionary reasons for both racism and multi-culturalism, and how we solve the current systemic problems with our political and economic order.

The Portal

All of our Mice are Broken. On this episode of The Portal, Bret and Eric sit down alone with each other for the first time in public. There was no plan.

There was however, a remarkable story of science at its both best and worst that had not been told in years. After an initial tussle, we dusted off the cobwebs and decided to reconstruct it raw and share it with you, our Portal audience, for the first time. I don't think it will be the last as we are now again looking for our old notes to tighten it up for the next telling. We hope you find it interesting, and that it inspires you younger and less established scientists to tell your stories using this new medium of long form podcasting. We hope the next place you hear this story will be in a biology department seminar room in perhaps Cambridge, Chicago, Princeton, the Bay Area or elsewhere. Until then, be well and have a listen to this initial and raw version.

What Happened at Evergreen College | Bret Weinstein

“If you're not politically confused at the moment, you're not paying attention.”
Bret Weinstein

- - - - -

Since the 1970's Evergreen State College in Washington has held a Day of Absence. On this day, Evergreen students and staff from minorities choose not to attend the college to highlight their contribution.

In 2017, the college proposed new plans for the day. Instead of minority students and faculty voluntarily choosing not to attend campus, the change would flip the event with white students and faculty asked to stay at home.

Bret Weinstein, a biology professor at the college, protested these changes, writing to the college: "there is a huge difference between a group or coalition deciding to voluntarily absent themselves from a shared space in order to highlight their vital and under-appreciated roles, and a group or coalition encouraging another group to go away."

The letter opposing these changes led to a large number of students making claims that Bret's actions were those of "a racist" and led to a group confronting him outside of his classroom. Widespread protests followed, with physical threats made against Bret and the college decided to close the campus for two days.

In this interview, Bret and I discuss life at Evergreen College before the protests, how events unfolded, the repercussions for both Bret and the college and why he believes the reactions may be symptomatic of the current political climate.

What Bret Weinstein Thinks About Basically Everything

Village Global's Venture Stories

Erik is joined on this episode by Bret Weinstein (@BretWeinstein). He is a biologist and evolutionary theorist.

They discuss:

- His start in the field of evolutionary biology and how he realized that the big questions everyone thought had been answered actually only seemed that way because the big questions had stopped being asked.

- Why two characteristics of a given creature or object cannot be maximized at the same time, and why thinking in terms of trade-offs explains virtually all of biology and society.

- Why he says “any utopian is not welcome at the adult table to discuss modern civilization.”

- Why we need to get over the idea that we can blueprint a society that works.

- Why markets are excellent at telling us how to do things but terrible at telling us what we should want.

- Game B and some of the stubs of that idea that exist today that could be built out.

- Why “no honorable person would choose to do what natural selection wants us to do.”

This is an audio version of Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying: Having a real conversation & Gender Ideology vs Biology which were published on the Rebel Wisdom YouTube site on February 8th 2019.
How do we have difficult conversations? Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying became the most high profile victims of campus activism, after they were driven out of Evergreen College in Washington State, USA. Recently they have become inaugural members of the so-called Intellectual Dark Web. The aim of the IDW is to have difficult conversations in public. In this conversation with Rebel Wisdom's David Fuller they explain how their experience at Evergreen has informed their understanding of 'thinking in public'.
