Identifying Core Values for Self Awareness (Dr. Karin Anderson Abrell)

Hope to Recharge

Dr. Karin Anderson Abrell shares her story of choosing to let her core values lead her life, even when others don’t understand. She was unwed until her 40’s because she would not settle for a marriage that did not align with her values. Because of this experience, much of her work has been about helping others thrive as a single person. Our decisions and feelings are based on values. We need to understand our core values before we can begin the work of changing our thoughts and our mindset because values are the foundation for our thoughts. We also need to understand what is most important to us before we enter into commitments such as marriage. In most situations, partners need to agree on religion, because it permeates so much of our lives. if one’s partner thinks your beliefs don’t make sense, it will be hard to connect with them or make decisions together. How do we determine what our core values are? One good indicator of a value is that one get into fights with people about it. Maybe it’s punctuality, finances, politics, religion, expectations, or your definition of success. Pay attention to what makes you angry, and then ask why. What is the reason behind your strong emotion? Is it respect? Safety?  Exploration of the values handed down to you by your family of origin is an important part of the process of individuation. If you want to know what your values are, you must find out if you really agree with what you were taught as a child. Your parents might not approve,, but if the rules you live by do not sit well in your soul, you will might not find the happiness you seek. You might even have a meltdown and end up questioning everything anyway, so you might as well do the work now, before you fall apart. Therapy is a great place to find out who you are and how to grow to live without compromising your values. Finding the right therapist can be a challenge, especially if you are not aware of what your values are. If your therapist does not believe that your values are important, it will be hard for you to make progress. Don’t despair - keep looking until you find someone who aligns with what is important to you. At the end of this episode, Dr. Karin and I discuss the power of positive mindset practices. We have both personally improved our lives so drastically by making simple changes like taking time for gratefulness and choosing to smile. We have committed to staying mentally healthy, and to do that, we need a positive outlook. You can find a lot of information on this topic in other episodes of Hope to Recharge. EP 45: SINGLE IS THE NEW BLACK | Dr. Karin Anderson Abrell

Hashtag Single

Let's talk about single shaming.  Chances are, you're been victim to it at least once in your life.  You've been told, directly or indirectly, that since you're clearly so fabulous and still single, that you simply must be doing something wrong!  You're too picky.  Or you're too thin.  Or too loud.  Or too desperate.  The list goes on and on. And who are the people most likely to be using this disparaging language on us?  Our friends.  Our family.  Even our own mothers.   To be fair, it's not really their fault.  They have been indoctrinated for decades with society's belief that a woman's worth is determined by her relationship status.  But Dr. Karin and I are not havin that, and we take a super deep dive discussing all this and more from her acclaimed book, "Single is the New Black: Don't Wear White 'Til It's Right," as well as her experiences from her background as a psychology professor for ten years in Chicago, as well as from her time being an accomplished (yet single) woman in her late 30's.  It's a super juicy episode so buckle up and put on your women's empowerment body armor for this excellent episode helping us celebrate International Women's History Month! Finding & Allowing Individuality within Family with Dr. Karin Anderson Abrell

The Better You with Kacie Main

In this episode, we talk all about family dynamics and family norms when it comes to closeness and boundary setting, and the individuation process that every child and parent must go through. Dr. Karin Anderson Abrell is a psychologist, author, podcast host, speaker, and musician. Her book, Single is the New Black: Don't Wear White 'Til It's Right is a word of empowerment to singles—encouraging them to stay strong amidst “single shaming,” live life on their own terms, and never ever settle for anything less than an extraordinary relationship. A former professor, Karin now hosts Love & Life—a podcast providing lively and informative discussions grounded in psych research to help us thrive in all realms of love and life. In this episode, we discuss: ·      What individuation is and how it affects the whole family system. ·      Different levels of connectedness and separateness and how that plays into individuation. ·      The relationship between connectedness, enmeshment, and love. ·      The struggles with individuation from the parent’s perspective and how that can affect a marriage. ·      Ways to parent to make the future individuation process easier on everyone. ·      How parental financial support vs. financial independence plays into individuation. ·      How a very close family can sometimes result in a very dramatic individuation process. ·      How parents can reframe their child’s individuation process to make the change easier on themselves. ·      And how to maintain closeness within a family but also allow each member to be themselves and live their own life.
