Myself With Others

Vivian Gornick is a writer of essays, criticism, and literary nonfiction, a fierce feminist, and a proud New Yorker. Her 1987 book about her relationship with her mother, Fierce Attachments, was recently chosen by the book critics of the New York Times as the finest memoir of the last 50 years. In our conversation, Vivian reflected on growing up among working-class Jews in the Bronx, her struggles with her mother, her journey through the women’s liberation movement, and her relationship to desire, love, and work.Links and References:Fierce AttachmentsThe Odd Woman and the CityThe Press of Freedom: An Ofay’s Indirect Address to LeRoi JonesRadical Chic: That Party at Lenny’s - Tom Wolfe

A Conversation With Vivian Gornick

Now What? With Carole Zimmer

One day in 1970, the Village Voice sent writer Vivian Gornick to cover a women’s-liberation gathering on Bleecker Street. She came back a radical feminist. And it was her articles in the Voice that helped spread the word about the burgeoning gender equality movement that came to be known as second wave feminism. Since then Gornick has written many books including her latest Taking a Long Look and her celebrated memoir Fierce Attachments. We walked through the streets of Greenwich Village talking about all the things that make a long life worth living. “Now What?” is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Tay Glass and Alex Wolfe. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.

Vivian Gornick’s Time

The TLS Podcast

This week, Thea Lenarduzzi and Lucy Dallas are joined by the critic and novelist Claire Lowdon to consider Vivian Gornick, an American writer of essays – on literature, politics, the self – that demonstrate a rare “ability to stand back and look at the world in which she finds herself, and then set it down calmly on paper”; the TLS’s poetry editor Camille Ralphs explores the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons and some of the literature that inspired it; plus, libraries under threat (again), Unica Zürn gets her time in the sun, and the three greatest novels of the twenty-first century...so far.Taking a Long Look: Essays on culture, literature, and feminism in our time by Vivian GornickAppendix N: The eldritch roots of Dungeons and Dragons, edited by Peter Bebergalwww.the-tls.co.ukProducer: Ben Mitchell Hosted on Acast. Episode 425 - Vivian Gornick

The Virtual Memories Show

Literary and feminist legend Vivian Gornick joins the show to celebrate her new collection, Taking A Long Look: Essays on Culture, Literature, and Feminism in Our Time (Verso Press). We talk about the biggest shock of looking back at her work for this career-spanning collection, why she organized it from most recent to oldest, and the difference between being smart and being wise. We get into the process of discovering her voice and figuring out she's a minimalist, how she got better at judging her own work, her criteria for culling books from her apartment (and her embarrassment when one showed up in an unexpected place), the importance of rereading (and why she wrote a book about it), and why the New York Review of Books recently said she "has long enjoyed an audience of literary depressives and feminists". We also discuss her 1970s essays on feminism, the movement's evolution in the past 50 years, how the Brilliant Exception became the rule, why political correctness if different than ideological splits, the New York she loves most, and why she's dying to go to a movie theater again.
