After a few weeks off, it’s great to back and launch into a new year of talking BBQ and kick it off with one of the great people in the competition world, Kelly Wertz from 4 Legs Up BBQ out of Great Bend, Kansas. Kelly - with his signature western hat and cowboy boots - has been a mainstay on the competition circuit since 2003. The 2008 Jack Daniels World BBQ Invitational champion tells us about how he got started, why 4 Legs Up might not have been a great name for a restaurant and his biggest mishap at turn-in time. We also discuss the new KCBS Strip Steak Series which Kelly helped put together. We also welcome our buddy Richard Fergola of new show sponsor Fergolicious BBQ. Ray Lampe is known as “Dr. BBQ” for his many ventures, including pitmaster, author and television personality. Known for his love of ’Q and long, white goatee since an impromptu cook at the Mike Royko Rib Fest in his native Chicago in 1982, Lampe recently added restaurateur to his long resume. He tells us about the “Dr. BBQ Restaurant” in St. Petersburg, Florida, along with his take on the state of modern BBQ, kale salad and his beloved Chicago Bears - plus much, much more. This is one visit to “The Doctor” that you won’t mind one bit. The second half of the program features one of America’s top competition pitmasters. Kelly Wertz of "4 Legs Up' has won the Jack Daniels Invitational and American Royal among other big contests during his 16-year competition career. The Nebraska native who lives in Great Bend, Kansas, is easily recognized on the circuit for his big-brimmed, western hat and cowboy boots.
