Born and raised in Montebello, California, actress Chelsea Rendon has been a working actress since the age of 7, after booking a leading role in the feature film "No Turning Back", which went onto win multiple awards for her portrayal of Cristina.

She continued to work on shows such as "E.R.", "The Shield", and "Judging Amyas" a child, and recently worked on Disney's "McFarland, USA", starred in Netflix original hit "Bright", and has recurred on Freeform's "The Fosters". Chelsea stars alongside Mishel Prada and Melissa Barrera in the half-hour drama series focusing on two Mexican-American sisters from the east side of Los Angeles. As an actor who is attracted to empowering female roles, Chelsea draws inspiration from the likes of Viola Davis, Mariska Hargitay and Taraji P. Manis, this week we had cafecito with Chelsea Rendon.

Born and raised in Montebello, California, Chelsea Rendon has been a working actress since the age of six. Her first role was a lead in the feature film  No Turning Back, which won the Alma award for Outstanding Independent Feature Film in 2002. Recipient of a Young Latinos In Hollywood award, Chelsea has been known to portray dominant roles for over a decade. Most recently, she is recognized for her role as a young “woke” activist ‘Mari’ in STARZ’s hit drama Vida. The series premiered to stellar reviews and was named one of the top shows of 2018 and 2019 and received 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. One of the fan favorites, Chelsea’s character is from the Eastside of LA where Chelsea herself grew up.

Chelsea was born for drama on television. At a young age her television work kicked off with guest roles on E.R., The Shield, and Judging Amy. She went on to recur on Freeform’s The Fosters and the hit Showtime series Shameless. Most recently, she guest starred on the brand new CBS series All Rise.

Equally as dedicated to film, Chelsea has brought her talents to Disney’s McFarland, USA, and the Oscar-nominated film A Better Life. She can also be seen in Netflix’s original hit Bright alongside Will Smith and Netflix horror film Thriller. Chelsea recently starred in the immigration drama, The Infiltrators. The film mixed documentary with narrative dramatization premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2019. Directed and produced by Alex Rivera and Cristina Ibarra, the film centers on a small group of young undocumented immigrants who embark on a high-risk mission inside America’s for-profit detention system in order to set people free. Teaming up again with Bright director, David Ayer, Chelsea stars in the upcoming gritty American crime thriller, The Tax Collector, alongside Shia LaBeouf, Lana Parilla, and George Lopez.

As an actress who is attracted to empowering female roles, Chelsea draws inspiration from the likes of Viola Davis and Mariska Hargitay, and hopes to one day produce her own content and try her hand in directing.

During our conversation, Chelsea and I talked about her story, growing up in Los Angeles, her love for Latinx brands, and how her character Mary in Vida changed her.

INTERVIEW: Vida, Love, and Representation with Carlos Miranda and Chelsea Rendon

Vida is entering its third and final season this weekend. The hit STARZ series focuses on two Mexican-American siblings from East Los Angeles who return home after the death of their mother. While their relationship is the focal point of the show, there is another pair of siblings that showcase different familial and cultural dynamics and are just as vital: Johny and Mari. Played by Carlos Miranda and Chelsea Rendon respectively, the pair have a bond that has been tested over the past two seasons through love and loss. I got the chance to speak with Miranda and Rendon about their roles as siblings, the impact of Vida, and how the series has showcased brown talent behind and in front of the camera.

Music, Milf’s and Memorial Day w/ Radio Menea and Chelsea Rendon

Play

On Episode 22 of the new season on ReVolver, the crew talks about spending Memorial Day in Rachel’s yard and she tells us why her husband should be anointed the Memorial Day “Grillmaster”. Jaime recaps how competitive game night at the BBQ became (money was involved), and Mike bad mouths his Taboo team (which ironically is a very taboo thing to do). Rachel and Jaime also break down their last rehearsal for this Saturday’s Room 28 Sketch comedy show in NYC (tickets still available—see link below).

On “Bochinche Bites”, Jaime starts off by calling out some people who weren’t happy with his NY Mets trivia loss on episode 21. He also gives his thoughts on Roseanne getting cancelled, the thirty year-old man getting sued by his parents because he won’t move out, and Porn Hub’s Top Search terms of the year.

This week in “Frankspiracy News”, Frank educates us about the rise of “smart cities” which depending on where you live, might make you feel a little stupid.

The crew interviews Vero and Perez of the podcast, Radio Menea. They share what inspired them to create “the woke Latinx music podcast you should be listening to”, how they manage to record living in two different states, and how Latinx podcasts have changed since they first started doing the show.

The crew also does a “Que Lo Que Quickie” interview with actress Chelsea Rendon of the new Starz original series “Vida”. She covers how it is working on a show with an all Latinx writer’s room, her start as a child actor on shows like “ER”, and Rachel invites Chelsea to crash at her place next time she's in New York City.
