R4R Superstars LIVE at CIM: Janae Baron, Joe Retherford, and Charrissa Lin -R4R 164
The Running for Real Podcast
Everyone knows the stories of the pros. The professionals, the experts, the people who already have found their confidence, their strengths, but what about the other runners. The rest of the running population, who have been through some real struggles, but have never had the opportunity to share their stories, their experiences, their courage with the world. At Running For Real, we try to do exactly that. Give a voice to those who are inspiring and motivating, but those who often are forgotten as they are not at the front of the race. This time it is through a live show. We are bringing you meet the Running For Real Superstars Community live from the California International Marathon Expo. I am excited to bring up Janae Barron, the mother has gone from a 3:20 marathon to 2:50 marathon, and was at CIM to attempt to run an Olympic Trials qualifier. Janae will show you that even if something seems intimidating and too high to reach, what do you have to lose in trying to reach it? Joe Retherford lost his sight age 17, and was at CIM to complete his first marathon. I had the honor of being his guide the day after we recorded this episode. But Joe's story and learning to love his life post vision loss is inspiring, and wonderful to see how running played a big part. Charissa Lin never saw herself as a runner, always thinking as an Asian American that sports weren't her thing, so why even try? She has now completed the marathon majors, and taken her personal best a long way since her first marathon. Many physical setbacks along the way could have stopped Charissa, but they didn't, and for that, we admire her dedication and love. Listen to these three runners share their triumphs, setbacks, and what they have learned. THIS is what running for real is all about. Janae Baron just ran a 2:49 marathon at the St. George Marathon and I had to get her back on the show to hear all about it! What I love about this story so much is that for 8 years she had a dream to break 3 hour in the marathon and just a year ago she did that. After accomplishing that dream she went after the goal to run her first 50 miler and then slowly started adding back in speed. I personally had no idea a 2:49 was brewing in that training she was doing and couldn’t be happier for someone who worked so hard for a 9 minute marathon PR. Fun fact- she now shares a PR with my husband Glenn. Fun news we also get to talk about her announcement that she is gunning for that OTQ at CIM in just a couple of months! Quick rundown on Janae- in case you don’t already know her- she blogs full time over at The Hungry Runner Girl, she is a wife, mom, step mom and dog mom. She is just as sweet in person as you could imagine she’d be from her daily posts over on her blog. A true gem this lady! If you haven’t listened to my first episode with Janae which was over two years ago- go back and listen to episode 65 and learn all about her life! Janae has also been a gracious returning guest on my patreon page as well and you can find an episode with her there from right after she ran her first 50 miler! "That’s running — all of us are having major fails along the way! That’s what keeps bringing us back. We’re chasing that perfect race and that perfect day." This past weekend, Janae Baron — Hungry Runner Girl — ran a 2:49 at the St. George Marathon. It was a 9 minute 55 second personal best time at the distance. It took Janae nine years to go sub-3:00 in the marathon. Last year, she ran a 2:59 — and thought she was good, done, and satisfied. Her potential, she thought, had been reached. But then: a 2:49, just one year later. On this episode, Janae recaps this breakthrough race, sharing every detail of the weekend, including what it was like being part of the elite start (and getting her own fuel and hydration bottles on the course!). She talks about how, exactly, she's gotten faster, and about joining a team and what that looks like. (She now trains with a group of "big dreamers," she told me.) Janae also opens up about what it's like racing when you're a public-facing person and have thousands of people following along: Does that add pressure, motivation, or both? Had a great time speaking with Janae Baron, one of the worlds top running bloggers. Was excited to hear about her venturing into ultras after spending the last 8 years focused on achieving a sub-3 hour marathon. I'm pretty sure she will be The Hungry ULTRA Runner Girl soon! Hearing great people talk about how they reached an important stretch goal is one of the joys of this show. Janae Baron has spent years dreaming, writing, and talking about running a sub-3:00 marathon. Then, at the St. George Marathon, she finally turned her dream into reality. Janae has one of the most popular running blogs in the country, www.hungryrunnergirl.com, and she has written countless words about the trials that can impede a runner’s progress. In this episode, we take a deep dive into her marathon triumph, her nine months of training after the birth of her daughter, her doubts about this marathon effort, and so much more. “Running is important, but it’s not everything.” —Janae Baron When Janae Baron was on the Ali on the Run Show last December, she was 37 weeks pregnant, so needless to say, she’s seen some big changes now that she has an eight-month-old daughter, Skye, added to her six-member family! On this episode, Janae talks about how that transition has gone, and what the biggest challenges and surprises have been so far. She opens up about the easy parts, the hard parts, and, of course, the running-related parts. Plus, a very special guest at the beginning of the episode! This week, I am thrilled to welcome to the Ali on the Run Show my dear friend — and everyone’s favorite running blogger — Janae Baron! Before we get to that, please join me in congratulating Janae and her family on the arrival of their newest member, Skye, born December 9! Janae, of course, is the beloved personality behind the popular Hungry Runner Girl blog. Janae is a super speedy runner who lives in Utah with her husband, Andrew, their kids (Brooke, Knox, and now Skye!), and their dog, Beretta. Janae was nearly 37 weeks pregnant when we recorded this episode and, as always, was just as sweet, positive, and bubbly as she is on the internet — plus, she was willing to get super honest about everything. Throughout the episode, Janae and I chat about her struggles with amenorrhea, dating after divorce, running before, during, and after her pregnancies, how negative comments really make her feel, and both the beautiful and challenging parts of raising a blended family. She opens up about how she actually makes a living as a blogger, talks about the game-changing blog post that got 600 comments, debunks some common Mormon myths, and shares more about her past with disordered eating, and whether she now considers herself fully recovered. (I smiled this entire time, but then Janae made me weepy when she talked about how she found her place in Knox’s life. So prepare to experience every emotion throughout this episode!) What a fun episode with Janae Baron! Some of you might know her from her blog Hungry Runner Girl. Janae is so sweet, kind and has such a fun personality. I knew it would be so easy and fun chatting with her. Janae is a runner and a fast one at that, with a half marathon PR of 1:21 and marathon PR of 3:04. She is the momma of an adorable little girl and step mom to an equally adorable little boy. In this episode we talk about running, walking through a divorce, post divorce dating and marriage. Janae is open and honest about the challenges of having a blended family, and she is so adorable when she talks about her husband Andrew who she is so clearly in love with. I also get a little curious asking her questions about being Mormon and then we get deep into the running talk as well. Basically, Janae is my new best friend and I’m holding her to coming out for the Live show in September.
