Read more

It’s every young parent's nightmare and it’s some parents' reality. My guest this week shares with us her family’s story through her son's addiction, overdose, and recovery. She describes what it looks like through the eyes of a faithful mother who did all of the right things but still found herself in the middle of a war. We talk about her struggles with bipolar disorder and her husband's experience with Coronavirus. She has sweet encouragement for all of us moms - we are not alone in these struggles!

Katherine James attended Columbia University, where she also taught undergraduate fiction. Her debut novel, Can You See Anything Now?, won Christianity Today's 2018 Fiction Book award and was a semifinalist for the Doris Bakwin Award. Her new book A Prayer for Orion is out now and is very beautifully written. She lives in West Chester, PA with her writer-philosopher-preacher husband, they have three adult children who are more awesome than everyone else in the world and she prays for them every night.

WHAT WE CHAT ABOUT:
  • coping with the pandemic with your family geologically spread out

  • Kate’s husband’s battle with COVID-19, recovery, and what God taught them through it

  • Kate’s bipolar diagnosis and journey

  • the “shoulds” while going through with depression

  • altering the definition of joy from feeling to faith

  • how medication has helped Kate

  • the misconceptions and guilt of having a child who’s an addict

  • predispositions for addiction

  • how Kate’s son’s addiction both strained and grew her faith

  • the use, shame, repeat cycle

  • resources for parents helping a child with drug addiction

Kate James lives with purpose

I’ll be eternally grateful for this conversation with Kate James. Kate is an internationally renowned career, business and life coach, and a mindfulness teacher based on the Mornington Peninsula. She's full of wisdom and thoughtfulness on how we can live with purpose, gain clarity about our direction and feel confident to pursue a career and life we love.

This episode relates to this month's focus on finding our “why”. Our “why” can be called lots of things. In yoga it’s called your sankalpa. It can also be called your purpose. Or your true north.

Essentially, your “why” is the purpose, values and beliefs that underpin everything you do. It is completely unique to you, and it’s the reason why you do what you do.

Kate works to help her clients identify their values and strengths so that they can define their own version of a meaningful life. She is bursting with integrity and honesty, and I feel honoured that she was so generous with her thoughts and energy for this episode.

She provides a number of brilliant resources that can help you to identify your own “why”, develop your strengths, and then guides us through a beautiful meditation to support this process. I truly hope that you get as much out of this conversation as I did!

Enjoy, and have a wonderful start to 2019.

Episode 16 - Mindfulness Over Mind Fullness with Kate James

Play
Read more
Kate James is a business coach, author, and meditation teacher as well as a self-confessed introvert. She's built a career over 15 years as more of a 'low-key kind of coach' who helps her clients 'get motivated but not in a high-fiving ‘ra-ra’ kind of way'. What she has come to realise is that - by playing to her strengths as a quiet, grounded, and intuitive person - she has attracted the right people to her and is able to truly serve them.

I saw Kate speak recently at an event followed by a fun and big personality, but it was Kate's soft spoken words of wisdom that blew me away. I was so grateful when she agreed to be on the podcast to chat about mindfulness, in the midst of a looming deadline for her third book.

In this episode, we chat about:

What mindfulness actually is and Kate's own approach to mindfulness;

How to be mindful instead of mind full (especially if you are an internal processor and prone to overthinking);

How to be seen in your business in amongst all the noise as a more introverted person;

Why really understanding and accepting yourself and your strengths can really serve you and your clients;

The importance of giving yourself permission for down time and re-energising.
