#023. This week we're talking flintknapping-- learning about making and using stone arrowheads and knives. We discuss the knapping from a high level perspective, with a little bit of how-to and the principles involved, a bit of considerations for using your stone blades and tips, things to keep in mind when getting started, etc. I consider flintknapping to be a foundational skill, almost all other technologies are based around having a blade in order to cut with, and I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with someone who is good at it.Mike is a professional flintknapper who has been knapping for about 40 years, and he makes some gorgeous work (check it out at artofishi.com). We had a great conversation, and I think you'll enjoy it! Big thanks to Rich Williams, the guest from episode #21, for recommending I chat with Mike!Links to any resources mentioned can be found at:folkcraftrevival.com/23
Phat Phred Mulrolo and AFB sit down to talk with Mike Cook. Mike proceeds to tell us the history of the ancient world, and we bond sharing stories of digging up bones, tools and Peruvian outhouses. Somehow all stories involve poop. Mike got a first class tune up from Coach Steve LaBranche, helping him prepare for a 100k. Was it the workouts or did Sandwiches somehow enter the plan? Either way, we had a great time chatting with MY Cook. This is a show about videogames, the people who play them and the people who make them. Each episode, a guest talks about the games that have shaped their life in one way or another. Games that have inspired them, games that have forged connections & games that have soothed wounds. Checkpoints!Hello! So good to be back. My guest on today's episode is the amazing Mike Cook Mike is an AI researcher, the founder of #procjam (this year's even has just started so you should check it out.) and the creator of ANGELINA an AI system that makes video games. As you can imagine, this is a mind blowing and fascinating talk. It honestly completely reshaped the way I think about and understand AI. There's also a ton of great video game stories like the surprise LAN party he had for his 10th birthday, how Command & Conquer cracked open his mind, his mum keeping the secrets of Monkey Island to herself, his 1000s of hours with DOTA 2 and how the AI he created to create games reflects the games he creates himself."He's smart, nice, liked by all. Why is he targeted for destruction?" Episode 20 - Going Down the Inclined Plane Trails with Mike Cook
On this episode of 159 Inclined, Will and I met with Mike Cook and Amy Bradley at the top of the Inclined Plane Trails to catch up on some of the exciting things happening at the Inclined Plane Trails and outdoor recreation in the region. After catching up, Mike guided us down the Inclined Plane Trails. It was quite a thrill! You’ll get to learn some techniques going down the hills by Mike and listen in on some of Will’s crashes (he and his bike are ok!) For Will and James, it was also a reminder of just how much hard work and perseverance Mike and others put into making the Inclined Plane Trails. Truly remarkable! If you haven’t had a chance to check out the trails and are looking for an adventure, make sure to get there this summer! We hope you enjoy the show!
