The Dr. Will Show Podcast
Hi, I'm Dr. Sam Fecich and I am here to tell you that teaching doesn't begin when you walk across the stage at graduation, but instead teaching begins during your first college class at 8:00 AM. I like to think of myself as a "Game Changer" (KTI 2017) in the field of higher education and educational technology. I am a professor at Grove City College, where I teach undergraduate pre-service education majors about the beauties of educational technology. I enjoy taking preservice teachers to educational workshops, events, and conferences to attend and present. It is a great way to network and build your professional learning community. I earned my Ph.D. from Penn State in Learning, Design, and Technology. But before my travels to PSU, I taught students with special needs for four years. I taught for two years as a teacher for students who were diagnosed with multiple disabilities and for two years as a technology integration teacher. My expertise is in assistive technology, specifically in augmented and alternative communication. I have experience consulting, evaluating, and training students, parents, teachers, and other professionals regarding AT and AAC devices. I enjoy going to flea markets, collecting pinball machines (my husband fixes them and I play them), baking (I make an awesome chocolate truffle), working out, and spending time with my family. EduMagic: A Guide for Preservice Teachers This book challenges the thought that “teaching” begins only after certification and college graduation. Instead, it describes how students in teacher preparation programs have value to offer their future colleagues, even as they are learning to be teachers! This book provides positive examples, helpful tools, and plenty of encouragement for preservice teachers to learn, to dream, and to do.
We sit down with Dr. Samantha Fecich-- teacher, author, professor, and podcaster who runs Edumagic! In this episode, Dr. Fecich shares her experience with burnout as a Special Education teacher and how she went from working with middle schoolers to preservice teachers in higher education. We discuss the importance of sharing your voice, getting connected, seeking positive influences, and being conscious of the teacher brand you build for yourself with your online presence. This is a Burned and Over-It episode for teachers who need to think about their teacher brand, especially online, and may need a safe, less public place to share their voice, if they don’t feel that they’re being heard in their immediate environment.
