Break-Time Bonus: Kiese Laymon Is The Only Black Southern Writer In The Room

The Only One In The Room

Picture this: You have a book to write, a memoir which contains so much raw truth that you'd rather write a lie instead.Writer, author, and professor, Kiese Laymon, wrote about the weight: The weight of racism, the weight of obesity, and the weight of sex, gambling, and familial love. And addressed the whole thing to his mother. But what would you do if publishing your book would mean naming all the secrets you’d spent a lifetime avoiding? Would you put your life on blast and let the whole world in? Or would you take the easier, softer way and write a lie that you could live with?More From Kiese Laymon:Visit his website: https://www.kieselaymon.comBuy his book Heavy or check out some of his other booksFinding Kiese Laymon:Instagram & Twitter: @kieselaymonSpecial thanks to our sponsors:Prose Custom Styling Gel lets you curl outside the lines.  Take your FREE in-depth hair consultation and get 15% off your customized gel (and your ENTIRE order) today! Kiese Laymon bears the weight of a difficult past in his powerful memoir, Heavy

Writers and Company from CBC Radio

Kiese Laymon originally conceived of his award-winning memoir Heavy as a weight-loss book, but it turned into something more profound: an intimate account of growing up Black in Jackson, Miss. With fearless honesty and hard-edged humour, Laymon describes a childhood filled with love, but also violence. The memoir confronts his complicated relationship with his mother, as well as his lifelong struggle with his weight and addiction to gambling. This interview originally aired January 4, 2019.

Episode QS68: Kiese Laymon + Robert Jones, Jr. (September 23, 2021)

The Greenlight Bookstore Podcast

Critically acclaimed author Kiese Laymon and Robert Jones Jr. (The Prophets) discuss and celebrate the newly revised and reissued Long Division, Laymon’s 2013 debut novel. Described by the New York Times as “a time-traveling metafictional romp set in Mississippi that probes fame, creativity and the toll of racism,” Long Division upends conventions of narrative time, genre, and the expectations and assumptions mantled on Black characters by what Laymon and Jones identify as a a culture “trying to get us to write ourselves out of existence.” Their brilliant conversation reflects upon and contributes to a watershed moment in literature by Black authors. (Recorded June 7, 2021)
