He began his thirty-five year career working on patrol in several New York City precincts. In 1974, he became a member of the elite Emergency Service Unit. Nine years later he was assigned to theNYPD Bomb Squad. During his career with New York City Police Department he has been honored with the following New York City Police Department Awards: 6 Excellent Police Duty Medals, 10 Meritorious Police Service Medals, 8 Commendations Medals for acts involving grave risk of personal injury. In 2010 Mr.Barry received the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators “Medal of Valor”for dismantling a “live suicide bomber” wired with an explosive charge. Mr. Barry was designated a “Senior Advisor” to Deputy Commissioner John Miller who heads the NYPD Intelligence and Counter Terrorism Bureau and is also a guest lecturer at the United States Military Academy at West Point. As a life-long resident of Long Island, he volunteered his time to the Wantagh Hook, Ladder and EngineCompany # 1 and served as a firefighter, elected Lieutenant, Captain and Company President, two-term member of the Board of Trustees.
