In Episode #105, I am talking with Tom Bunn.

A licensed therapist and retired airline captain. He has worked for fearful fliers for over 35 years, and in that time, developed an effective way to keep his clients from having a panic attack on the plane. Studies have shown over 80% of his clients become completely free of panic when flying. As a side effect, they become free of panic on the ground as well. This was important because the therapy most often used from panic, CBT, ends panic in only 16% of clients treated with it. That led him to write Panic Free: The 10-Day Program to End Panic, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia. This book focused to ending panic in elevators, on bridges, in tunnels, high places, and MRIs. Recently, he supplemented that book with a workbook aimed specifically at pandemic-related issues.

Today, Tom  is going to share some of his insights on How to Calm Pandemic-Related Fear, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia

My guest this week is Captain Tom Bunn, a former airline pilot who is now a psychotherapist. Tom specializes in treating panic, which he got into through helping people with a fear of flying. Now he’s written a book, Panic Free: The 10-Day Program to End Panic, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia (affiliate link), which describes a way to use human connection to stop the panic response.

This was a really interesting book and a fascinating conversation. You’ll discover in this episode how oxytocin can stop panic from developing, and how to engage the parasympathetic nervous system to put the brakes on a runaway fear reaction. Other things we talked about included:

What is missing from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for some individuals with panic

In this episode, I interview Captain Tom Bunn, airline pilot turned social worker!

As you may know, I used to have panic attacks AND I couldn’t fly on an airplane without my husband. During a flight I’d either need to be medicated OR I’d be white knuckling a meditation the whole time. That’s changed for me now because of A Course in Miracles (ACIM). I’m still shocked at how my fears of flying have fallen away.

Tom’s approach to ending panic in ALL situations (not just flying) is based on legitimate scientific research and my hope is that his approach could help clear out any panic you’re having so you can continue to dive deep into ACIM and be the miracle worker that you are.
