Her latest book “Your Blueprint for Strong Immunity”, is a guide to cultivating strong immune health from a voice of reason in a rising tide of pseudoscience and promises of quick fixes. The cyclical nature of our immune systems. Why our ‘immune age’ doesn’t necessarily match our chronological ageImmunity, the sex hormones and our Menstrual cycle. How our blood sugar response is so individualThe power of protein and fibre, the unsung hero of longterm healthWhy we shouldn’t necessarily avoid the foods that make us bloated but work to increase our tolerance of them. Immunity and Menopause the impact of declining oestrogenMan Flu - the science to support it!The long game - how do you want to feel in your 70s and 80sThe importance of good liver function and how we support the processThe myths surrounding benefits of detoxes and sweatingAir pollution in our homes, household toxins and the stress of living in with clutter. The importance of spending time in nature and why we should limit the use of artificial fragrances. S7 E8: Immune boosting facts and fallacies with Jenna Macciochi
The Food Medic
Never before has the immune system had so much air time - but what actually is the immune system? Can it be boosted? What kind of things influence it? Does vitamin C really fight off a cold and there truth in the old wives tale - feed a cold, starve a fever? I’m Dr Hazel Wallace, host of the food medic podcast and on this episode we are answering all those questions with immunologist and author Dr Jenna Macciochi. Jenna has a PhD in allergy immunology from Imperial College London and has previously worked in academia, pharmaceutical industry and clinical trials. Jenna currently holds a Lecturer position at the University of Sussex progressing research into understanding the science of lifestyle related disease. This episode covers:- What actually is the immune system? - Factors which influence our immunity- Can you boost your immune system with food?- Should you feed a cold and starve a fever?- What steps to take to recover from a cold - Exercise and immunity - The importance of sleep and your immune system. If you loved this episode make sure to give it a review, rating (hopefully 5 stars) and share it with your friends and family. @thefoodmedic/www.thefoodmedic.co.uk
I speak with Dr. Macciochi about the foundations of a healthy immune system: personalised nutrition, appropriate physical activity and stress management techniques, and adequate sleep. Note the use of language here - a key theme running through todays conversation is context. Something that is always lacking in conversations around nutrition and lifestyle. Another key theme from today is consistency. We simply have to be consistent in creating health. Jenna's books can be found on Amazon here, and here.
21: Future proofing your immune system - nutrition, stress, allergies, and more. | Dr. Jenna Macciochi, PhD.
the NUANCE by Medicine Explained.
Dr Jenna Macciochi has over 20 years' experience as an immunologist researching the impact of diet and lifestyle on the immune system. Based in Brighton, Jenna is a lecturer at Sussex University and a qualified fitness instructor. She is a mother of 5 year old twins and a keen home cook, creating recipes inspired by her farm-to-table Scottish roots and capturing her Italian heritage. With a concerning growth towards generic, oversimplified health recommendations. Coupled with the guilt from trying, and failing, to achieve perfect health, she is on a mission to unravel the science around immunity and decodes exactly what it takes to be well in the modern day. She explores how we can no longer ignore the fact that our fast-paced, over-consuming, unrelenting lives are slowly eroding our delicate immune defences. Offering simple, clear and educated advice, debunking popular myths along the way, Jenna looks at nutrition, exercise, sleep and even mental health play into your immunity and long-term health.
The Immune System, Running and How to Train When on the Mend with Dr Jenna Macciochi
Well Far: The Running Podcast
Our health has never been more on the radar than it is at the moment, but what can we do either side of falling ill that supports our immune system and our running? Can vitamin C prevent a cold? Is it possible to boost our immune system? And are there times when running can do more harm than good? And, why are people reporting that returning to exercise after COVID is tougher than they ever imagined? To share an expert insight on whether we should hang up our running trainers at the first sight of a cold, or whether there are circumstances when it’s OK to sweat through sniffles is Dr Jenna Macciochi. Last year, Jenna published the book IMMUNITY: The Science of Staying Well which is all part of her obsession over understanding how nutrition and lifestyle interact with the immune system in health and disease.Topics covered:What is the immune system and why do we get sick? Can we boost our immune system health? What role does exercise play in the health of our immune system? Do intense workouts (long runs) weaken the immune system because of the stress they place on the body?Should you have a phased return to exercise or are you OK to pick back up where you left off?Are there any ways to self-monitor that your body is dealing with the stress of exercise OK?Should we be wearing masks when running to protect ourselves and others?COVID-19 is a rapidly developing situation.
