Episode 35: Jay Hughes

Conscious Anti-Racism

In what ways are the roads to recovery impacted by systemic racism? What’s the key to surviving in an environment designed to destroy you? In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Jay Hughes, the Director of Training at the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse. Hughes discusses the lessons he learned by being incarcerated and the circumstances and context in his life that led to his arrest. He highlights how intertwined systemic racism is within the justice system, what it’s like to not be able to see freedom, and the powerful impact of staying connected. Listen as Hughes addresses the misconceptions about substance abuse and recovery. Jay Hughes is an influential community leader whose non-traditional route to success includes 18 years of incarceration in both state and federal prison. In his current role as the Director of Training at the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse (GCSA), he is responsible for qualifying and certifying Addiction Recovery Specialist. Jay brings a wealth of experience to his highly sought after “Cultures” training which is part of GCSA’s flagship program, CARES. When he’s not advocating for the addiction community, Jay enjoys spending quality time with his son and daughter. Ep 16 - SMSgt Jay Hughes

Spotlight 32

This past week I had the chance to sit down with SMSgt Jay Hughes. If any of you haven’t had a conversation with him yet I’d highly recommend it. He’s a very open person who we could all learn something from. We talked about surfing in NC, September 11th, Jiu Jitsu and how it differentiates itself from other martial arts, teaching empathy, how to influence the people you work with, and how complaining isn’t really a bad thing for leadership teams. If you’d like to be part of the program you can email me at spotlight32podcast@gmail.com. I do also accept questions you’d like others to be asked or any other suggestions to make the show better.
