TRC: Mayer Hawthorne “Rare Changes” Review

The R&B Connoisseur

One of my favorite artists is back with another BANGER!!!! An in depth review of the new Mayer Hawthorne album “Rare Changes.” For 12 years I been riding tough for this guy and he has never disappointed. Ain’t no reason for him to start doing it now..........and he didn’t. His 70s/80s vibes are something to behold so stream, buy, listen and all that good stuff! I also talked about the NBA COVID situation, the NFL Playoffs, college classes and other random stuff (business as usual). Just opinions from my side about the albums (lyrics, concept, jokes, etc). ENJOY!!! Requests are always welcome. Follow me on twitter @alop3cia_brown. Ep. 22 | Mayer Hawthorne Interview

Let the Record Show

Let the Record Show, the crate-dug interview series in which artists discuss their favorite songs of all time as the tracks spin on vinyl, continues its third season today, as hosts Mike Pizzo and Warren Peace speak with Stones Throw alum and one-half of Tuxedo, Mayer Hawthorne. From the classic doo-wop stylings of The Festivals to the lush melodies of musical antiheroes Steely Dan, Mayer’s song selections draw a clear line to the sounds of his own discography, along with some deep cut selections from fallen idols J. Dilla and Prince. Originally released April 2019.

Mayer Hawthorne on Parliament's "The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein" (1976)

Heat Rocks

The Album: Parliament: The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein (1976) In the 1970s, no single artist was as influential in transforming the sound of funk as George Clinton. If the funk of the late '60s was embodied in the sparse, frenetic rhythms of James Brown, Clinton filled out and polished the sound across the '70s, with beefy banks of horns and raucous guitars. By the time The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein came out in the mid 1970s, the P-Funk sound was in full flower and that's when a young DJ from outside Detroit crossed paths with The P. Mayer Hawthorne, back when, was still known as DJ Haircut but a move to Los Angeles in the 2000s lead to a transformation into the smooth crooner we know of him today.  Besides the four solo studio albums he’s recorded, he’s also one-half of the retro boogie team known Tuxedo(alongside Jake One) as well as half of the post-punk n’ funk duo, Jaded Incorporated, (alongside 14KT). Fun fact: Jaded Inc’s 2014 album The Big Knock was released by Casablanca Records, long-long time home to Parliament’s recordings, including The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein.
