Laura Willoughby MBE

Be More Pirate

In this episode we tackle the somewhat taboo topic that is alcohol consumption. We're joined by the fabulous Laura Willoughby of Club Soda, a community that provides courses and resources for anyone who wants to change their drinking habits. A former political campaigner, Laura co-founded the movement in 2015 after realising that the standard narrative around alcoholism and recovery wasn't working for her, and so probably wasn't working for others either.   We learnt a hell of a lot from Laura about how you can bring much needed nuance to a binary conversation and tackle an entrenched social norm from multiple angles whilst remaining refreshingly human and non-preachy. Listen to the end for some great alcohol-free recommendations!  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

#13 Talking wellbeing and alcohol with Club Soda founder Laura Willoughby

i-wellbeing

Laura Willoughby is co-founder and director of partnerships at Club Soda, an organisation that helps helps people be more mindful about drinking. Whether you want to cut down, take a break from alcohol or stop drinking completely the Club Soda community can help – along with resources and courses, it's a one-stop shop for healthy drinking. We'll be sharing this pod on April 12 2021. We're just coming out  of lockdown and pubs are opening again – but before we rush back to the already booked-out bars, is it time to re-look at our relationship with alcohol? In February an ONS survey showed that deaths from alcohol increased by 16% in the first nine months of 2020, compared to 2019. The University of East Anglia recently found that bad habits, including drinking got worse in lockdown in the UK. At the same time there is evidence that more people have ditched the drink, or at least had a look at the demon.Laura Willoughby gave up drinking eight years ago, because she was in her words, a "dickhead with booze". She felt there was something missing to help people on a self-guided journey to change their drinking habits.Find out more about Club Soda at https://joinclubsoda.com and find them on social media at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linkedin.

Am I Making You Uncomfortable?

Drinking is such a normalised part of British culture that binge drinking as young adults is a rite of passage, hangovers are laughed off, social lives are built around the pub. We celebrate the good times and commiserate the bad, often with a drink in hand. But how do you know when you’re drinking too much? Joining this week’s podcast to help us answer that are Laura Willoughby, founder of Club Soda and The Mindful Drinking Movement, a community aimed at helping people reassess their relationship with alcohol, and psychotherapist Anjula Mutanda, who often works with people reconsidering their drinking habits.Full transcript here.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Sober Experiment Episode 14 Laura Willoughby

The Sober Experiment Podcast

Today we talk to Laura Willoughby MBE, who is co-founder of Club Soda, the Mindful Drinking Movement. Their aim is to create a world where nobody feels out of place not drinking. Club Soda has individuals, drinks brands, and social spaces in its membership. The inspiration for Club Soda comes Laura’s experience of giving up drinking seven years ago. A campaigner at heart with a background in movement building and politics, she realised that one of the big sticking points was a way to support people to take a self-guided journey to change their drinking. Club Soda has over 50,000 individual members, have built a venue listing guide for mindful drinkers (clubsodaguide.com) and they run the UK’s only Mindful Drinking Festival which is now in it’s 7th edition. She is author of How to Be a Mindful Drinker, a new book for 2020 published by DK books. Laura is chair of Imbibe’s No & Low Taste Awards judging panel for 2020.
