We also chat about her epic 52 hour birth, feminism and birth, the backlash she has received and how she deals with it. We end talking about walking your talk, having integrity and the hope for the future. A birth revolution is happening and it starts with you!
Bio:
Emilee Saldaya is the trail blazing leader and founder of Free Birth Society. She was a doula for over ten years, until the reality of her complicity with the obstetric system and the harms that it does to women and babies prompted her to find a better way. In aligning with freebirth, Emilee's dharmic path became clear. She quickly evolved into a "Radical Birth Keeper" who serves women birthing outside the system.
She founded Free Birth Society prior to the conscious conception of her first child, and went on to give birth to her daughter freely, on Maui, Hawaii.
Emilee’s acclaimed podcast (“The Free Birth Society Podcast”) quickly became a fan favorite and has reached millions of people.
Emilee is an inspiring and inspired coach, with the ability to immediately hone in on the self-sabotage and mental blocks that keep women stuck in unproductive patterns. Her approach is warm, kind, ferocious, and transformational, giving her clients the spacious witnessing that allows them to step into their power.
Emilee lives in Colorado, and frequently travels internationally as a speaker, coach, and leader.

This podcast is an introduction Emilee Saldaya, founder of Free Birth society.

Her work in the birth world at a fairly young age began opening her eyes to the importance and meaning of feminism. She felt alone in the midst of an industry that was overall harmful to women, which led her to creating what is now an expansive multi-faceted business entity under the name Free Birth Society (which has way more going on than the name implies). She shares her soulful and empowered life path that led her to the place she is now, which is a radical/revolutionary feminist unlike any that came before. In this episode we touch on the following:

The global community portion of FBS, which is like a virtual fire circle for women,  what it’s all about and who is involved in it.

Entrepreneurship in the Birth World and full-spectrum doulas.

The rooted decision to free birth and simultaneously invite the virtual world into that process through FBS podcast, a first of its kind.

How she came to terms with how unethical her work in the birth system was. The crossroads she came to upon becoming pregnant with her first baby.

How the rite of passage into Motherhood can really make or break us.

How she lives a life of integration and vision which pans out in a way that benefits her as a business woman and relatively new mother.

A little glimpse into her own free birth experienceWhat her phrase, “We birth how we live” means.

What has helped her create healthy boundaries being in a public position, bringing revolutionary feminist viewpoints, which automatically bring some controversy. How she manages being a committed activist, bringing of deep service to women without being swallowed up by the wide range of emotions and realities she must face. Keeping clear energetic boundaries amidst hate.

How backlash from her work has highlighted how appressed the female voice is and how she uses her privilege for the women who cannot use theres.

The importance of understanding Global oppression of women.

How privilege is a responsibility to protect women with less privilege.

Details into her most recent Mother-centered, woman-centered retreat. A very unique and beautiful experience.

The Radical Birthkeeping School: for women that feel called to serve women and not be behold into the systems that oppress us and keep us separate from each other.

I’m 40 weeks pregnant with our 3rd baby, Aluna, and I have the incredible honour of sitting down with Emilee & Yolande of Free Birth Society.

The truth, as we’re about to find out, is that women’s bodies are brilliantly made, our babies are wise, birth is inherently safe, and, in Yolande’s words, birth is not a laborious trial from which we need deliverance, but a glorious, normal, biologically & psychologically important initiation into motherhood.

48. Matriarchy in Action & Ancestor Assisted Birth - Emilee Saldaya

Medicine Stories
Episode artwork
Read more

Birth has been systemically taken from us by the powers that be, but each birthing body holds deep knowledge of how to bring forth life. This conversation is part of a much larger cultural remembering of what our ancestors instinctively knew about giving birth and nurturing our babies.

IN THE INTRO:

  • If we're not changing our minds, we're not growing
  • Mammalian birth [mama & mammal & mammary are etymologically related, and there's a reason for that]
  • How the Taoist medicine perspective of how energy moves through the female body explains why everyone wants to be around women

 IN THE INTERVIEW:

  • How Emilee’s radical teenage years led to her work now.

  • Supporting mother’s instincts so that the mother-baby conversation can happen.

  • Birth story: Dolphins(!), their potent medicine, and telepathic connection to birth (I cry).

  • The spectrum of birth experience from beautiful and respectful, to dark and scary.

  • How Emilee’s first hospital birth helped align her with her dharma.

  • Our special likeness to all mammals through hormonal sequencing and our need to birth in a safe, familiar space (the choice of birth location changes the hormones flowing through the body during birth).

  • Ultrasound technology safety and what affects our choices to use it.

  • We are culturally trained to fear birth, and be terrified of death.

  • How Patriarchy & Christianity disempowered birthing women.

  • Fear- allying ourselves with it, rather than struggling to “overcome” it.

  • Holding space for all individual birth experiences while still rejecting The System.

  • Surrogacy, the primal wound, the commodification of bodies, and our bodily sovereignty as women.

  • Staying open and nuanced in complex conversations.

  • Meeting your divinity through birth, and the sacred spirituality of pregnancy.

  • We birth the way we live.

  • We are all descendants of women who birthed at home (like 99.999999999% of our female ancestors). Birth is in our bones.

  • Creating a matriarchal household/family.

  • A freebirth is a birth unhindered, undisturbed, in the support of loved ones, and outside the system that oppresses women and especially women of color.

  • When we align with truth, in our power, we are unshakable.

Reclaiming Birth, Community, and Wild Woman Ways with Emilee Saldaya | COMMUNITY + BELONGING Mini-Series Part One

HEAL + LIBERATE
Episode artwork
Read more

Emilee Saldaya is the founder of Free Birth Society, and the host of the Free Birth Podcast, which shares personal narratives of women birthing in power away from the oppressive medical model that has monopolized childbirth in the past century.

She has been a Birth Keeper for 15 years, and after attending hundreds of births in every environment imaginable, she became quite intimate with the many ways in which the medical model of care is failing the vast majority of women and children.

As Emilee prepared to consciously conceive her own child, she knew her safest and most powerful option would be to manage her own care during pregnancy and freebirth her baby. She started networking the thousands of women around the world making autonomous birth choices via a private online community designed to offer support to free birthing women. Her daughter was freeborn last year on Maui, Hawaii.

Episode Highlights

-Emilee’s process of coming to understanding authentic birth

-Free birth as birth unhindered, outside the industrial medical system

-How patriarchy has sabotaged birth

-Centering birth as a natural event that all mammals experience largely complication-free

-How we would see a different earth if all women felt empowered and safe

-How change can happen quickly and powerfully when women talk and connect

-The shadow side and learning curve of stepping forward as a leader and public figure

-The power of re-establishing sisterhood in our current society

-Creating safe and nurturing community in virtual spaces when we don’t have a road map

-Filling up our cups in community so we can return to the world as radical advocates for change
