If there was ever a time to bring back the chill 90’s, it’s now.  You saw it in the loose fitting clothes, and you definitely heard it in the music. It was just a laid back time. A calm before the storm, if you will. Duncan Sheik’s blockbuster hit personified that era.  With well over a million radio plays, it followed you everywhere; inside your Toyota Camry, on VH1, aisle 7 at Costco and the changing room at Structure.

Perhaps today, as you sang along to it on Nineties On 9, you felt a tinge of sadness for this ultimate one-hit-wonder.  Save your barely breathing breath!  He’s doing just fine.  Nowadays, you’re more likely to find Mr. Sheik where the neon lights are bright than on some legacy tour with Deep Blue Something and Dishwalla. Duncan’s composing for Spring Awakening earned him two Tony Awards and he’s still one of the hottest names on Broadway.

I catch Duncan on a reflective day.  We pour over his entire career and I share a handful of my favorite songs that should have received more acclaim.  Quite a few are of past relationships and Duncan is as open, honest, funny and self-deprecating as any guest I’ve ever had. And did I mention we’re buddies now? 😂

I catch up with Grammy and Tony award winner Duncan Sheik, who tells me about his relationship with his hit, Barely Breathing, and the pressures of following up that hit. We talk about his very underrated Covers 80’s album, how he made each song his own and if he gotten any feedback from the artists he covered. Duncan headed to Broadway and wrote the music for the massive hit, Spring Awakening, and later American Psycho. He tells me the differences between writing for an album and for Broadway.

Duncan Sheik is an American singer-songwriter and composer. He is known for his 1996 debut single "Barely Breathing", which earned him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. He has composed music for motion pictures and the Broadway stage, winning Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations for his work on the 2006 musical Spring Awakening.

Tune in and listen to Duncan talk about all things related to his pre-Broadway and Broadway career, including:

  • How four guys in a van made him second guess the pop music world.
  • Why his dislike for musicals made him want to write one.
  • What he’d say to other popular artists who want to write for musical theater.
  • What a Broadway musical should sound like.
  • What to do when you hate your own show.

Duncan ushered in a new era of music for Broadway with his score for Spring Awakening.  And in this podcast, you’ll hear just how he did it.

A Conversation With RUPERT GOOLD & DUNCAN SHEIK: ‘American Psycho’ – A New Musical Thriller

Play

In the season of goodwill a new musical based on Bret Easton Ellis’ notorious novel American Psycho might earn itself the subtitle “NOT the Christmas Show” – but when the composer is Duncan Sheik, he of the sensational Spring Awakening, and the director Rupert Goold, fresh into his artistic stewardship of the Almeida Theatre, all bets are off. There’s even a number entitled “Mistletoe Alert” – so the season of rampant consumerism might well prove just the time to launch one of the most anticipated musicals of this or any season. In this exclusive audio podcast Sheik and Goold tell how the bloodiest show since Sweeney Todd has reached the stage and how for Matt Smith the leap from Doctor Who to Patrick Bateman – city slicker and seasoned psychopath – might not prove so dramatic after all. Bateman is surely one of the most alien and elusive creations in contemporary fiction.

Book writer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa has embraced the Batemanisms – “It all comes down to this: I feel like shit but look great” – and Sheik will be referencing the 80s soundtrack in Bateman’s head as a textural part of his eagerly awaited score. Patrick Bateman live on stage. Bring a raincoat.
