‘Is Reality All In Your Head?‘ with Bernardo Kastrup

Rebel Wisdom

Is reality created in our minds, or are the things you can touch and feel all that's real? Philosopher Bernardo Kastrup holds doctorates in both philosophy and computer science, and has made a name for himself by arguing for metaphysical idealism, the idea that reality is essentially a mental phenomenon. In this Showcase he explains why he's come to this conclusion, and why this age-old debate in philosophy can help us make sense of everything from how we practice science to how we navigate the meaning crisis. The Michael Shermer Show

In this expansive conversation, Michael Shermer speaks with Bernardo Kastrup, the executive director of Essentia Foundation. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy (ontology, philosophy of mind) and another Ph.D. in computer engineering (reconfigurable computing, artificial intelligence). Shermer and Kastrup discuss: materialism, idealism, dualism, monism, panpsychism, free will, determinism, consciousness, the problem of other minds, artificial intelligence, out of body and near-death experiences, model dependent realism, and the ultimate nature of reality.

Postmortem Survival and Analytical Idealism with Bernardo Kastrup

New Thinking Allowed Audio Podcast

Bernardo Kastrup, PhD, is a computer scientist, who has recently completed a second doctoral degree in philosophy. He is author of Rationalist Spirituality, Why Materialism is Baloney, Dreamed Up Reality, Meaning in Absurdity, Brief Peeks Beyond, More Than Allegory, The Idea of the World, and Decoding Schopenhauer’s Metaphysics. His latest book is Decoding Jung’s Metaphysics: The Archetypal Semantics of an Experiential Universe. He has published several papers on Scientific American’s website arguing for metaphysical idealism. His website is https://www.bernardokastrup.com/. Bernardo has launched a new organization, #EssentiaFoundation, and has produced some wonderful short videos that can be viewed at https://youtu.be/Nls4o_mR-sY and https://youtu.be/wJG6yL4ncK8. Here he addresses a series of questions related to the possibilities for different versions of postmortem survival (i.e., reincarnation, possession, mediumistic communication, etc.) in the light of metaphysical idealism. He notes that, in all cases, he expects that the mental contents of personal consciousness will remain as part of an impersonal universal mind – i.e., the one mind that sees through the eyes of all creatures. With regard to the findings of psychical research and spiritualism, his attitude – while open-minded – was one of uncertainty and doubt concerning the quality of the purported evidence. New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in “parapsychology” ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980).
