THRU THE LOOKING GLASS Podcast #021 Mixed by DJ Joma featuring a Guest Mix on Hour 2 from DJ Simon Murray from Northern Ireland.
Thru The Looking Glass - Weekly Podcast
Simon Murray is a veteran of the Northern Ireland clubbing scene from the 1990’s’, he previously worked for Baseline Magazine. Launched in 1995 Baseline Magazine connected with the burgeoning dance music scene at that time and growth with it. In 1998, Baseline merged with Belfast magazine Blank to become BBM and the following year, the magazine became the first in local history to win the prestigious IPR/BT Magazine of the Year award. Simon has delivered an exceptional ‘A History of Lush!, Portrush 1997-2002’ Mix. This is Part Two of the Mix, with Part 1 appearing a few weeks ago with Podcast #018. Kelly’s Complex in Portrush on Northern Ireland’s north coast is home to Lush! Nightclub. Setting the standard for clubbing in Northern Ireland since 1995 it has attracted some of the world’s top DJs and hosts regular BBC Radio 1 dance events. Still going strong after 25 years, Simon’s two-part mix encapsulates the period from 1997 – 2002; when to many at that time Lush! was perhaps the greatest club in the world, with the world’s biggest DJ’s at the time appeared on a weekly basis. Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the adventurer and businessman Simon Murray. What many of us would struggle to do over three life-times he has managed in one - as a teenager, nursing a broken heart and determined to prove himself, he joined the French Foreign Legion. Fighting in the Algerian war, he risked his life many times over; combat was at close quarters and was very bloody. Next, he set his sights on business - he ran some of the most well-known companies in South East Asia and was one of Chris Patten's key allies during the handover of Hong Kong. Then, in his 60s and looking for a new challenge, he chanced upon the idea of polar adventure, and went on to become the oldest person to walk unsupported to the South Pole. But after all this, his greatest achievement, he says, is his marriage. Perhaps it's no surprise that his wife of 43 years, Jennifer, is the first woman to have flown a helicopter solo around the world. These days their three children try to curb their enthusiasm for dangerous pursuits. But, Simon snorts, the couple simply say: "we're not listening."This programme contains descriptions that some listeners may find disturbing.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: O Soave Fanciulla (Oh beautiful maiden) by Giacomo PucciniBook: Cautionary Tales by Hilaire BellocLuxury: Lots of paper, pencil and pencil sharpener.
