About Ben Eubanks Ben Eubanks is the Principal Analyst at Lighthouse Research, a firm dedicated to uncovering the trends and technologies that drive HR, learning, and talent. His research focuses on human capital innovation, strategy, and technology. In addition, Ben writes a blog for in-the-trenches HR leaders at upstartHR.com, a resource that has touched more than 650,000 lives since 2009. You can connect with him on Twitter or LinkedIn. About HR Like a Boss In late 2018, John began working on a presentation centered around the key concept that the best human resources professionals he knows have a unique understanding of the financial and business side of their organizations. In fact, some of the best are business people first and human resources professionals second. After delivering the fourth presentation to a local SHRM chapter the idea for writing a book was born. And everyone knows the best way to write a book about gaining expertise is to talk to the experts. These chats build the foundation for "HR Like a Boss" the book while providing game-changing advice from those conducting human resources "like a boss."--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/willory/message
#263: How to Move Out of the 'HR Trenches' and into Consulting w/ Ben Eubanks, We're Only Human Podcast
HRchat Podcast - Interviews with HR, Talent and Tech Experts
In this HRchat, we'll consider the why and how of moving out of the HR trenches and into a consulting role. We'll also talk about ways AI will continue to change the HR function over the coming years. Bill's guest this time is Ben Eubanks an HR analyst, author, fellow podcaster, Chief Research Officer at Lighthouse Research & Advisory, and most recently, Founder of the HR Tech Awards.Ben operates as a human capital management industry analyst - helping companies and vendors with strategy, content, and more. He has been a speaker a decade at events such as the SHRM Annual Conference, ATD TechKnowledge, the HR Technology Conference.Previously, Ben worked as an "in-the-trenches leader in the HR field" within smaller organizations, government contracting firms, and the non-profit sector. This means, says Ben, that "I've had my hands in pretty much everything at some point: recruiting, benefits, training, employee relations, executive coaching, and the rest of the spectrum you run across in an HR shop".
Wow! Ben Eubanks on the show this week, he absolutely brings the heat with his knowledge and research on employee experience. First we get to hear some stories of Ben’s successful (and failed) attempts at becoming a fix-it-man, and how it relates to the current landscape of engaging employees during the pandemic. Did you know that according to a recent HBR article, “agreeableness” is the most important factor in determining work experience success in 2020? Ben and I flush out that concept and make the case for a kinder and more empathetic workplace. “If we have leaders who are not high on the “agreeableness" scale, how do we get them to be…and how do we model those behaviors? Give people a chance to support others and they will begin to prioritize how they act.” Ben presents research that caring about your people leads to higher engagement, lower turnover, and a happier workforce. I push back on that to make sure we aren’t just talking about a fluffy hypothetical construct, but also driving bottom line results for the numbers-driven leader. He defends the argument brilliantly! Ben also gets personal by telling us his driving motivation, “When I became an analyst I first committed not to do research for research’s sake, but to do research for practical impact. That’s what gets me excited.” If this is your first time hearing about Ben…you’re welcome! Check out his industry-changing work.
