5: Co-Creator of Process Optimizer, Co-founder & Certified EOS Implementor at The TRACTION Hub and Trainual Certified Consultant, Michael Erath

SMB Consulting Show

In this episode, Bradford talks to Trainual Certified Consultant, Co-Creator of Process Optimizer, and Co-founder & Certified EOS Implementor at The TRACTION Hub, Michael Erath about how to adapt to the current business climate. Late in 2010, Michael leveraged all that he had and started a new business. It was during the startup of his new business that Michael was introduced to the book Traction®. Shortly thereafter, Michael began implementing EOS® in his new business. Not only did the business grow and in 2015 make the Inc. 5000, but running the business on EOS® gave Michael the entrepreneurial freedom to eventually exit the day-to-day of the business and focus on his true passion, which is taking all that his entrepreneurial life has given him, share it openly and vulnerably, and in doing so give it all back. Since 2015, Michael has been a full-time EOS® Implementer where he not only coaches others through the implementation of EOS®, but shares from his more than 20 years of experiences in the trenches of the entrepreneurial world to help his clients recognize blind spots and learn lessons that can only be taught by someone who has lived through it all. Episode 88: Establishing Core Values and a Clear Company Vision with Michael Erath of The Traction Hub

Pool Chasers Podcast

In this episode, we sat down with Michael Erath who is the owner of The Traction Hub in Scottsdale, AZ. In the first 15 years of his career, Michael grew two businesses to over 45 million in revenue and over 200 employees. In 2009, the housing market crash, as well as a betrayal from a business partner and his own blind spots, caused him to lose it all. Late in 2010 Michael leveraged all that he had and started a new business. During that process, he was introduced to the book Traction by Gino Wickman and began implementing EOS into the organization. The business grew tremendously and even made the Inc 5000 list in 2015! Since 2015 Michael has been a full-time EOS Implementer where he and his team at The Traction Hub help others through the implementation of EOS.   Not many books have made an impact on the two of us as much as Traction did. We too saw the benefits of implementing the EOS system into our business Brothers Pool Service. When a client referred to the book one day, we both read it and felt like it was talking directly to us! There are 6 major components discussed throughout the book, but for this podcast, we wanted to focus solely on the vision component. This is the section of the book that discusses core values and core focus. Michael tells us why it is so important for the whole team to understand the company’s vision and how once everyone is aligned, it can be something incredible. He also gives advice on how to create your own set of core values and core focus, and how to roll them out to your team. You will definitely want to take notes on this one! Episode 009 | Relentless Leaders - Michael Erath

Relentless Mentality

Having grown up in a family manufacturing business which he grew from $8 to $18MM in 10 years as CEO, Michael Erath has spent his entire career in the trenches of the entrepreneurial world. He also co-founded a Hardwood Timber Trading Company in 1999 which grew from start-up to a $27MM business in 2007. Since 2003 he has been an active member of several business peer groups – YPO, where he spent 9 years in Forum as a member of the Southern 7 Chapter; EO, where he continues his Forum experience as a member of the Arizona Chapter to this day; and Vistage, where he was a member of a Trusted Advisors Group in Columbus, Ohio. When the housing market crashed in 2009, Michael lost everything. Due to a combination of declining sales, betrayals from key staff, and his own blind spots, Michael went from owning two multi-million-dollar businesses to almost destroying his marriage, losing his home and companies, and struggling to make ends meet. But he didn’t let failure keep him down. Instead, he learned from his mistakes and rose back to success. In 2010, Michael leveraged everything he had and started a new manufacturing business. In early 2014, an EO colleague introduced Michael to the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS®) by way of the book TRACTION. In EOS®, for the first time in his 20-year career, Michael found a simplified, holistic system that created a perfect framework with which to operate his business. By implementing EOS® in his own business, Michael built a strong and unified Leadership Team who became capable of managing the day-to-day operations of the business, which freed him from the overwhelming control the business had been having over his life. With that newfound freedom, Michael was able to step away from the business to pursue his greatest passion, which is to work with fellow entrepreneurs to help them strengthen their businesses by implementing the Entrepreneurial Operating System as a Certified EOS Implementer. To do so, he founded SMART Direction in 2015 and now works full-time with leadership teams of entrepreneurial companies from SMART Direction’s Phoenix-based “Dojo”, also known as The Traction Hub. Michael’s journey inspired him to help others avoid the mistakes he made by writing his first book, RISE: The Reincarnation of an Entrepreneur. In RISE, Michael recounts his remarkable story with brutal honesty and self-reflection. He demonstrates how systemizing a business and building healthy, open, and honest leadership teams can help business leaders free themselves from the control their business has over them and find time to pursue other passions. He calls it Entrepreneurial Freedom – Getting out of your own way and living your ideal life with a business that you own, rather than a business that owns you. Michael lives in Phoenix with his wife Elizabeth and their French Bulldog, Rocco. They have two adult sons. In this episode, Michael discusses the ups and downs he experienced throughout his career, as well as how fear was a motivator to rise back to success. 023: Michael Erath, Smart Directions

Columbus Entrepreneurs' Podcast

On today’s episode, Michael Erath joins Kevin to talk about his story. Michael shares the ups and downs of his entrepreneurial ventures in the family business, and how he took ownership of his time and business to find entrepreneurial freedom. He now works actively as an EOS implementer, and is releasing his book Rise, on August 29th.   Key Takeaways: [:47] Michael grew up as second generation in a family manufacturing business, where they manufactured hardwood veneers. His dad was on the sales side of the business, and after he graduated college, Michael moved to Roanoke and became the manager of operations. Michael talks about the ups and downs during his time, particularly how they were affected by the recession, and moving all the ownership from his mom’s estate to his name. [5:17] Michael had to work with lenders and banks to orderly liquidate the business. They avoided bankruptcy and Michael kept his credit in tact. At the same time this was going on with the family business, he found out that his business partner at his other company (began in 1999) had been embezzling from the company and committing bank fraud. [11:27] Unfortunately both companies didn’t make it through these events. Once he got back on his feet, Michael decided to start a new business in the same industry in 2011. They outsource their production, and keep a small warehouse in Columbus. They also have a log trading division within that business. It’s now about a $7 million business. [13:50] One of the frustrations of building this new business was struggling to reach a point where they could start to turn a profit. He began to focus more on revenue, and it blinded him to other things he needed to watch out for in the business. He joined EO Columbus in 2011 to get the peer-to-peer experience. [16:10] They implemented EOS beginning in 2013, and over the next year and a half the business became very profitable. EOS helped shine a spotlight on the real issues they had and helped them with a system to solve those issues and clean up the company internally. The biggest value for Michael was to realize that he could delegate more and strengthen his teams. This gave him more freedom and time on his hands to do what he wanted. [19:35] With this spare time, he went through the training to become certified as an EOS implementer. He is now sitting in the “owner’s box” at North American Veneer, and has taken himself out of the day-to-day operations, and runs their quarterly and annual sessions. Michael talks about the areas where he still has to stay a little more engaged. [22:00] As an EOS implementer, Michael gets to work with other companies, and he’s realized a passion for that kind of collaboration. He enjoys getting to see companies build momentum and watch things come together. [23:47] Going back to his roots, Michael’s dad started the original veneer business in 1968. Both of his brothers worked in the family business for a period of time, though not without drama. Michael’s entrepreneurial streak started in high school and college, where he worked summers to make money, and also was involved in a band and handled a lot of their promotion. [27:50] Michael’s book is written as a memoir, taking a reflective look at some of his success and also some of the blind spots that led to the collapse. One of the main focuses is the idea of entrepreneurial freedom. This idea of an “EOS Life” allows people to work with people they love, doing things that they love, making a difference, being appropriately compensated, and having time to pursue other passions. You can live the life, but it takes getting out of your own way. [30:52] Michael’s wife encouraged him to write his book and share his story. He began to realize his struggles were something other entrepreneurs were encountering, and he felt he could help share lessons learned and help others. His work as an EOS coach helps him do this as well. [35:43] Michael’s book is out on August 29th with a one-day only discount pricing. Follow the link below to see where you can order the book.
