#307: Choose Joy with Laura Pedersen

More to Be Podcast

What does it looking like to choose joy in the middle of suffering? How can you find joy again after losing those closest to you?We tackle these questions and more on this episode of the More to Be Podcast. I'm joined by the founder of the Choose Joy Foundation, Laura Pedersen, which was established in honor of her sister, Sara Frankl. Some of you might remember joy advocate, Sara, as the blogger chronicling her faith alongside her journey with a debilitating illness and necessary isolation, at Gitzen Girl. At the age of 38, Sara went home to be with the Lord, and her sister, Laura, took up the mantle of carrying her Choose Joy message forward, all the while putting into practice what Sara preached as she faced a battle with breast cancer. It was an honor to spend time with Laura and unpack the promises found in God's Word. We talked about what it looks like to live out our faith as spiritual beings in human bodies committed to kingdom work. You'll walk away from this episode not only encouraged by the wisdom Laura shares but encouraged by her retelling of her sister's and father's faith. This family leads with the Word as their banner. May we all take note and commit to doing the same. Scripture FocusPsalm 46:10Romans 8Notable Links & MentionsGrab the R.A.W. 10/21/2018 - The Trouble with Darwin with Laura Pedersen

All Souls NYC Adult Forum

The Trouble with Darwin with Laura PedersenSunday, October 21, 2018Charles Darwin is arguably the most influential writer of the past 150 years. Publication of his theory of evolution through natural selection in 1859 revolutionized the world in ways that we are still building on and also reeling from. The interconnectedness of all living things presented enormous implications and complications for religion, science, politics (especially slavery) and even the arts. This was in addition to conflicts within Darwin himself and his own family. Darwin (1809-1882) had a Unitarian background and married Emma Wedgewood, an enthusiastic supporter of his work, who also had a Unitarian upbringing. No prior knowledge of Darwin’s theory is necessary.Laura Pedersen is a bestselling author, playwright, and former columnist for the 'New York Times.' She was the youngest person to hold a seat on the American Stock Exchange, and in 1994, President Bill Clinton honored her as one of ten outstanding young Americans. She had a TV show on the Oxygen Network, and has appeared on 'Oprah,' 'David Letterman,' 'Good Morning America,' 'Primetime Live,' 'The Today Show,' 'CBS This Morning' and other national programs. She has performed standup comedy at The Improv and writes for several well-known comedians. Pedersen was voted one of the ten best speakers in the US by Meeting Planners International and has headlined at the Bakersfield Business Conference, ATHENA Awards, F. Scott Fitzgerald Society, and the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan. Her most recent book, Life in New York, won the Seven Sisters Award for best nonfiction. Laura is a lifelong Unitarian Universalist, an ordained Interfaith minister, and a longstanding member of All Souls who has frequently presented sermons and adult education programs here.

F. Scott Fitzgerald: Rebelling Against God Part 3 with Laura Pedersen

All Souls NYC Adult Forum

F. Scott Fitzgerald was the first Irish Catholic to become a major American novelist. He was fascinated with the glamourous life of the Jazz Age, yet profoundly affected by a culture of moralism. Fitzgerald’s stories revolve around the way vanity and materialism permeates American society, while his characters yearn for some form of spiritual existence that they cannot achieve. There was no happy reconciliation between these warring strains, which gives his work the richness and tension that has kept it relevant. As the Roaring Twenties came to a close, it appeared that America’s faith-based fervor had given way to a modern age of temperance and tolerance. However, religious conservatism would re-emerge in the 1980’s with a new generation of fundamentalist crusaders demanding that our politicians answer to the pulpit. Once again, we find ourselves roiled in a culture war where faith and government clash in the public square.
