Rev. Micah Bucey is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, currently serving at Judson Memorial Church of New York City, a congregation committed to curiously seeking the intersections of spirituality, justice, and creativity. A graduate of Fordham University and Union Theological Seminary, Micah founded and continues to spearhead Judson Arts Wednesdays (JAW), a weekly art and food gathering that provides free meals for guests in need and developmental space for artists in need. Over the course of its nine seasons, JAW has fed thousands and nurtured the creative output of hundreds. Micah is a member of InterFilm, the International Interchurch Film Organization, and reviews films with an eye toward their spiritual message and meaning for Spirituality & Practice. In addition to his passion for nurturing the creativity in everyone, he is deeply committed to social justice. We spoke about his own history as a gay Christian, serving in ministry to the artistic and LGBTQ communities, and the link between art and spirituality. Rev. Micah Bucey: Saying YES To Yourself, Your Creative Voice, and Your Community - 002
Rev. Micah Bucey is a minister at Judson Memorial Church in NYC. But he almost said no to ministry. We talk about his journey towards saying YES to himself, and how he practices saying YES in community. Our conversation spans Micah's work to support artists as modern-day prophets, his activism for immigration reform, and lessons from The Golden Girls in human relations.Bonus: Experiment with your creative voice by downloading the Guided Meditation: Finding Your Prophetic Voice at kamararose.com/resourcesYou can find Rev. MikeyPod 248 | Minister Micah Bucey and the New Sanctuary Coalition
Micah Bucey returns to the podcast this week to discuss the detainment and deportation of Jean Montrevil and Ravi Ragbir. Both men are leaders in the New Sanctuary Coalition and members of Judson Memorial Church here in New York City. Micah briefs us on what has gone down with both of these gentlemen, and gives some solid suggestions about what we can to do get involved. Note: the word I couldn’t think of in the intro was “affiliate.” Thanks for going on that ride with me. Follow Micah Bucey on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Hello to our fans, old and new, whos and thems, etc. etc. etc.! This week is the first episode of what we hope will be a series on religion and queerness, but today our focus is specifically on homosexuality and christianity. We start out with a rundown of the gay christian content we know (featuring an appearance from our future selves to talk about THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME, THELMA) and then debrief our trip... to church. That's right, these two sinners entered a holy building. And guess what? We loved it. Now we go every week. Joining us from Judson Church is Reverend Micah Bucey, who talks to us about being a gay pastor and his favorite Bible verses and adaptations, and then answers some questions from queer teens on bible.com (actual url.) Let us know which Joseph caused your sexual awakening! **NOTE: This episode contains mentions of pedophilia, sexual assault, and suicide. But then again, so does the Bible. I am so grateful and proud to know a spectacularly glittery person like Micah Bucey. He’s Associate Minister at historic Judson Memorial Church here in New York City where he has shepherded many artists (like me!) into the performing world. His kindness and insight seems unlimited, and I am just so pleased to have him as my guest on the podcast this week. Micah and I chatted a bit about where we go next as queer, artist-y, left-of-center folks, especially in light of the news of our President Elect. We talked about communities, spiritual and otherwise, and the events of his life that led him to become a minister. I hope you enjoy the show, and please do tell a friend, leave a review on iTunes, and subscribe using the applicable links in the column to the left of this page!
