#92 Andrea Bonime-Blanc — Breach Tactics

How can companies prepare for, weather, and recover from a breach? In this podcast, Andrea Bonime-Blanc, Founder and CEO of GEC Risk Advisory, offers her best practices for cyber resilience: they begin and end with leadership. She recommends executives build and grow a culture that is cyber resilient, with boards aware of cyber risk and employees practicing cyber hygiene.

Fair or not, CISOs carry the responsibility for cyber breaches. Consequently, it is important that these often tech-trained professionals expand their skill sets. Andrea believes “CISOs need to be cross-disciplinary,” able to make boards aware of risk and capable of speaking to business executives in terms they will understand.

Once the inevitable has happened what is the best and, crucially, fastest way to recover? Have a crisis management plan, a liaison on the board, and ensure leadership communicates with stakeholders empathetically and effectively. For Andrea, the companies who have recovered most successfully are those with leaders who are “stakeholder savvy, not just shareholder savvy.”

  • 02:06 — How can companies plan to be cyber resilient? Build a cyber-resilient culture inside your company, fold in contractors too.
  • 05:33 — CISOs’ skillsets need to be cross disciplinary.
  • 08:34 — The components you need to respond well to a breach or attack.
  • 12:01 — Good leadership and communication is the differentiator between coping with a breach and not.

ESG+T

  • 01:39 — ESG+T. Why we must add Tech to Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance.
  • 04:33 — It all begins with leadership — if corporate leaders think ESG+T is important it will trickle into corporate culture.
  • 05:10 — Examples of the good governance ( Microsoft) and bad governance (Facebook).
  • 07:21 — Managing ESG+T for traditional non-tech companies.
  • 10:06 — These are difficult times but people can drive the necessary change.

In this podcast, regular Cyber360+ guest Andrea Bonime-Blanc talks about her new book “Gloom to Boom: How Leaders Transform Risk into Resilience and Value” and how it sets out why we must add tech to environmental, social, and corporate governance. She believes tech is an essential component as it is influential in every component of our lives.

Andrea says the implementation of these practices begins with the leadership of a company and that they can be the differentiator in determining whether a company thrives or founders. In addition, she offers her own thoughts on — as well as examples of — what good and bad leadership looks like.

Understanding Risk in Cybersecurity
Andrea explains her role as a translator of digital topics into business language to help decision makers better understand strategic risk. She goes on to explore why leadership and culture are crucial in managing risk, the monetization of data and our tech addiction, and the need for the different stakeholders in society to help formulate the right regulatory solutions.

  • 04:01 Cyber has grown so fast that boards and executive teams often lack the experience and knowledge to understand the risk.
  • 08:11 Leadership and culture are crucial in managing risk. Ethical leadership provides the opportunity to create products and services that build risk and security into the design.
  • 12:38 The data breaches and privacy mishaps will lead to ever greater government regulation.
  • 13:41 The consumer has been sold out. Our data is sold without our knowledge, but worse than that, with our permission because we don’t read the T&Cs we sign.
  • 15:15 The danger is that laws on regulation will be made by people who do not understand the cybersecurity industry nor the issues it faces, so business must engage constructively and help craft them.
  • 17:52 Knowing your risks affords you the opportunity to create value.
  • 20:38 The four most important strategic risks fall under four main categories: environment, social, governance, and technology.
  • 23:51 The path to a career in cybersecurity doesn’t have to be STEM. The development of this industry requires people with different perspectives and expertise, and they need to reflect the stakeholders in the customer base that organizations have.
