Episode 55: Proprioceptive Prostheses and Clinical Impact | Hamid Charkhkar and Anna Smith

Biomechanics on our Minds

We talked with Professor Hamid Charkhkar from Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland VA Medical Center and Anna Smith, a former Case Western student and research assistant in Professor Charkhkar’s neuroprosthesis group. We discussed the importance of being open to feedback from all stakeholders for human-centered research, how to translate that into holistic treatment strategies personalized to individual users, and about the impactful neuroprostheses that integrate sensory abilities being developed by Hamid’s lab. Anna highlights her experience learning that “I don’t know” is a valid answer in research while Hamid reminds us that things not going according to plan is an expectation in human research. Denver Designer and Renovator Anna Smith of Anna Bode Talks Sustainability | S30E6

The Chaise Lounge Podcast

Welcome back to the Chaise Lounge! This week, Nick May sits down with Anna Smith, owner of Anna Bode located right here in Denver Colorado!Anna grew up in New Hampshire. She found an interest in historic preservation, although science and chemistry were not her strong suits. She then moved to studying history of decorative arts in London, focusing on historic homes and the history of interior design. Eventually she worked for an interior design studio in New York, and later moved Colorado to open her own.Because of her background in historic preservation, Anna often works on older homes, specifically residential renovations; the idea of restoring a piece of architecture to its former glory is exciting to her. She also highlights how her team puts a strong emphasis on sustainability and reducing material waste, hoping to influence the industry in a significant way.Running a design business is not just about being a good designer. Of course there's the business side of thing, and Anna shares how she learned to manage her studio through a variety of methods. Some of them include listening to podcasts and taking notes, networking with creatives, and even starting a mastermind group to explore ideas with other designers. If you'd like to learn more about Anna, be sure to follow her on Instagram @annabode and check out her website annabode.com! In terms of what success looks like, my goal with Anna Bode - since we've transitioned into this focus on sustainability - is to feel like we're operating in a different way than design has in the past, and that we're making an influence on the industry.Anna SmithTweetChaise Lounge Updates Coast to Coast Design is back baby! Anna Smith and Mara Donahoe on Home & Hybrid Education

Off-Trail Learning

Anna Smith and Mara Donahoe are the co-founders (with Natasha Morisawa) of the National Association of Home & Hybrid Education (homeandhybrideducation.org), a new advocacy organization that hopes to bring together all members of the alternative education movement in the United States. We discuss why Home & Hybrid Education (HHE) was created, whether the U.S. needs another homeschool organization, how HHE differs from other large organizations (AERO, ASDE, HSLDA), and why public hybrid options deserve a seat at the table. I ask them what a massively successful HHE would look like in 10 years, why they’re interested in the thankless task of building a politically centrist “big tent” organization, and how parents can get involved today.Anna and Mara are also co-founders of Urban Homeschoolers in Los Angeles, which you can learn more about at urbanhomeschoolers.com.Blake’s new free audio workshop, How to Stay Motivated as a Self-Directed Learners, is available at blakeboles.com/motivation.

Anna Smith - Women in Film, Whistle-humming and Not-So-Worthwhile Movies

Calm Down Dear

It's a new fortnight, an awards show has FINALLY given Michaela Coel the love she deserves (thank you BAFTA), the internet's been mad and we love Wolf Alice. And books. And basically everything else. Did we mention we're enthusiasts? Our guest this week is someone with a similar passion for everything, the phenomenal critic, host of the BBC's Movie Show and a woman who spends more time than anyone we've ever met gallivanting (working) at the biggest film festivals in the world, the wonderful Anna Smith. Having started out as a music journalist, she became the first female editor of a UK dance magazine only to then change her specialty to film, where she became only the second woman ever to be made Chair of the Film section of the UK's Critics Circle. Saying she's accomplished seems like an understatement, but did you know she can also analyse people through their handwriting and whistle and hum in harmony? Nope, us neither. As always you'll get loads of recommendations from us, plus all the anecdotes you never really needed (potato stamps, we see you) and a very exciting event announcement... If you like what you're hearing but there's something in particular you think we should dabble in/someone you think we should speak to, please do get in touch.
