203. How Ultra Endurance Athlete Damian Hall Runs 250+ Miles (and you can, too!)
The Strength Running Podcast
Damian Hall is one of the best ultra endurance athletes in the UK. He has represented Great Britain at the trail world championships, holds 7 records or Fastest Known Times (FKTs) and he has competed in the Sahara Desert and the Arctic. All this in less than a decade-long running career. Damian recently wrote a book called In It for the Long Run, which depicts his 2020 Pennine Way record attempt and details of his midlife crisis. In today's conversation, Damian shares about his most recent Wainwright Coast to Coast FKT and the hallucinations caused by hyponatremia (decreased sodium concentrations due to over hydration). We also talk about the lessons learned in ultra running that apply to life. In this episode we also talk about: How to prepare for days of running What drives someone to run for hundreds of miles How to know when you're ready... for anything in life Links & Resources from the Show: Follow Damian on Instagram Learn more from his website SR training plans for advanced runners Check out Damian's book! Thank you Elemental Labs! A big thanks to Elemental Labs for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I’m drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It’s tasty and delicious and I find that I’m not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn’t eating enough sodium. There’s now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you’re worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. They just released their first new flavor of 2021, their most requested flavor, watermelon salt. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor and get your hydration optimized.

The Way of the Runner - conversations on running with Adharanand Finn
Adharanand Finn talks FKTs, being an inspiring parent, the hero complex and writing books about running with one of the world’s toughest ultra runners, Damian Hall, who holds the record on the UK’s 268-mile Pennine Way and has finished fifth at the UTMB, the most prestigious race in the trail ultra running world. His book In It For The Long Run was published in May 2021. Find him on Instagram: @ultra_damo Produced by @IAmTheHow. Music: Starfrosch.
Episode 92 is an interview and discussion with Damian Hall. Damian Hall recently entered the ultra running record books by breaking the Fastest Known Time (FKT) for the 268-mile (431.48kms) Pennine Way. Now ratified as 61hrs 35mins Damian’s time bettered that of American ultra runner John Kelly, who just a week earlier had run it in 64hrs 46mins. Prior to that the record had stood unbeaten for 31 years, belonging to Mike Hartley, who ran 65hrs 20mins in 1989. The Pennine Way is Great Britain’s oldest – and arguably toughest – National Trail, twisting its way from Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders to Edale, Derbyshire, and including a section along Hadrian’s Wall. Much of it is over remote, boggy hills, with a total ascent that exceeds the height of Mount Everest. Popular with hikers, who usually complete it in 16-19 days, Damian did it in just two-and-a-half, battling sleep exhaustion and all manner of tough weather conditions along the way. When he’s not running, Damian is a coach and a journalist and author with more than 20 years' experience of writing for and editing magazines, newspapers, books and websites. If you are like the majority of runners, you may feel like you are constantly beset with niggles (a euphemism for injuries!!) that take away from your joy of running. E54. A Totally FKT 2020 with Damian Hall & Summit Fever
Against a backdrop of the Covid_19 pandemic and the slew of race cancellations it led too, a few runners have managed to salvage the spirit of competition and a number of epic achievements from the clutches of what could have been a very quiet year in trail/ultra-running. There can be few claims to greater success this year than Damian Hall's. He has just grabbed his 3rd record of a busy summer after a nail-biting 14hr charge along the South Wales Traverse. We cover this, his year as a whole and also the upcoming film 'Totally FKT' which documents Damian and John Kelly's exploits on the Pennine Way earlier this summer (see episodes #42 and #44). In a special feature, Will also chats to Matt and Ellie Green of Summit Fever, the film-makers behind this amazing documentary which premieres on Sunday 22nd November at Kendal Mountain Festival Learn more at: https://www.summitfevermedia.com/pennine-way-fkt Cover Images: (c) innov8/Dave Macfarlane
