PsychTable.org: A Digital Classification Table of Human Evolved Psychological Adaptations. A conversation with Niruban Balachandran and Daniel Glass

Play
Read more

In 1992, the evolutionary psychologists Leda Cosmides and John Tooby predicted, "Just as one can now flip open Gray's Anatomy to any page and find an intricately detailed depiction of some part of our evolved species-typical morphology, we anticipate that in 50 or 100 years one will be able to pick up an equivalent reference work for psychology and find in it detailed information-processing descriptions of the multitude of evolved species-typical adaptations of the human mind...”

Finding it unnecessary to wait until 2042 or 2092, Niruban Balachandran first proposed and published a classification table of human evolved psychological adaptations in 2011. He then teamed up with Daniel Glass in 2012 to co-found and co-publish a research paper announcing PsychTable.org, an open-science taxonomy devoted to uncovering the richness and complexity of our evolved human behavior. In addition to these two peer-reviewed research papers, Niruban and Daniel have also written a This View of Life article to accompany this podcast episode.

Dr. Daniel Glass is a clinician and researcher in the disciplines of evolutionary and clinical psychology. He has published sixteen peer-reviewed scholarly articles in the fields of psychology, medicine, and evolutionary studies, on subjects ranging from human emotions to peer bullying/victimization to Alzheimer’s disease. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Suffolk University and is currently a postdoctoral fellow at a private practice in Connecticut. His dissertation is on the emotional processing function of dreaming.

Mr. Niruban Balachandran was a winner of the World Bank's Innovation Challenge Prize and the International Society for Human Ethology's Linda Mealey Award. He is widely published in scholarly journals and print media, and is a frequently-invited speaker at international conferences. He is a Master of Public Administration (MPA) graduate of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, as well as a Bachelor of psychology graduate from Rutgers. He was also a member of the Harvard Behavioral Insights Group.

They are both project co-leaders of PsychTable.

This is a new series that we are trying to start on my channel/podcast, which will be called “RoundTable”, and where we will be having conversations with people involving the theoretical foundations of PsychTable, including people that are working on different Evolved Psychological Adaptations (EPAs).

In this first episode, we talk about what PsychTable is about, and how it will be built. We discuss the criteria used to classify something as an EPA; the kinds of EPAs that would be considered (including cultural and group-level EPAs); who would be able to access it, and how the evidence would be weighted; and who would benefit from it, and in what ways. We also talk a bit about the relationship between psychological adaptations and mental modules.

Daniel Glass | An Unusual Life We Live

Play
Read more
I've known about Daniel Glass for years. He's the "history of drums" guy (he's actually way more than that but that's how I first thought of him).  Now, I don't know if you're aware but I help out with a little drumming podcast called The Drummer's Resource with my friend Nick Ruffini. If you know the podcast, Nick's interviewed nearly 500 drummer's and musicians including Daniel.  So, when Nick asked if I'd wanted to help with The Daniel Glass Show, it was a no-brainer. We've been working together for a year and some change and I couldn't be happier to have him on The Pocket. Daniel Glass is an American drummer, author, historian and educator. He is recognized in the drum industry as an authority on classic American drumming and the evolution of American Popular Music and a member of the pioneering swing group Royal Crown Revue. Glass has recorded and performed all over the world with many artists, including Brian Setzer, Bette Midler, Liza Minnelli, Gene Simmons of KISS and so many others.  He was twice voted one of the top five R&B drummers in the world by readers of Modern Drummer and Drum! magazine. As an educator, Glass has published several books and DVDs, including, The Century Project DVD this all just scratches the surface. Plus, he's the first lefty to be on the show...ahh milestones.
