You Can’t Go Wrong with Ina Garten – Trent Pheifer of Store Bought Is Fine

Today I’m interviewing Trent Pheifer, the blogger behind Store Bought is Fine, a blog where he has chronicled his way cooking his way through Ina Garten’s entire recipe repertoire. Trent started this project in 2015 after he got fed up with online recipes that hadn't been tested and also because he realized he didn't have the basic skills needed to be successful in the kitchen. After years of watching Ina’s show and seeing the success he had with her recipes, he created the Instagram account, Store Bought is Fine, which is a riff on a regular line that Ina uses. Since then, Trent has made more than 800 of Ina’s recipes and has moved away from cooking his meals from the frozen aisle, to using fresh ingredients to prepare most of his meals. Along the way, Trent has had a lot of fun, earned some food world fame, and has expanded his cooking skills.

We dipped into the Radio Cherry Bombe archive for this funny and insightful interview with Ina from the 2015 Jubilee conference in New York. Author and activist Julia Turshen talks to the food world icon about luck, dinner party advice, and what she looks for in members of Team Ina. “You can teach people about cheese,” she says. “But you can’t teach them how to be happy.” Tune in for more Ina wisdom! And be sure to check out her new book, Cook Like a Pro: Recipes & Tips for Home Cooks.

It's hard to believe that The Barefoot Contessa cookbook was published as recently as 1999, because its author, Ina Garten, has become so indispensable to home cooks around the country and the world. Garten brings together devotion to brilliant flavor, a natural and profoundly personal elegance, and an understanding of that special sustaining community that emerges around a shared meal. If there's one thing that sets Ina Garten's books apart from others, it's their savvy sense of what kind of gentle guidance will let those of us struggling along at home feel ready to leap into new cooking challenge, and in her new book Cook Like a Pro she offers insights into the methods and tricks that she and others use to make the most out of every item in the refrigerator and every tool in the kitchen. So, with Thanksgiving just around the corner, what better time, we thought, then to sit down with the master herself?

Backwards Star Galactica was a show where we watched Battlestar Galactica for the very first time, but in reverse chronological order, and tried to figure out what the show was about. It was the absolute worst idea for a podcast that anybody has ever had. Thus, we've decided to preserve it here for absolutely nobody. Enjoy!!

Warning: There's a bit of a screamy-jump thingy at the 21:48 mark of this episode - mind your ear holes. If you can make it past that, you've got enough embarrassing audio to blackmail our hosts for, oh let's say roughly the next 5 years. JK, our hosts give zero Augustus Gloops. Learn about the sleepover ritual/game "Bloody Mary," the consequences of playing the game in a dark bathroom (hint: there aren't any), and the historical figure(s) the game might be loosely based on.
