Episode 511: Judika Illes - Pure Magic

Stirring the Cauldron

It was a magical night in many ways, and always is when Judika Illes is my guest, and magic was what we talked about. She has two new upcoming books, Daily Magic, a perpetual calendar focused on days of spiritual and magical significance that gives us the power and the tools we need to take control of our destiny and will be released in August. Pure Magic will be released at the end of the year and is a useful tool and resource for beginners and experienced devotees of the magical arts, and a basic introduction to magic and includes a psychic glossary, a primer on the four elements, colors, and magical supplies (including minerals and botanicals) and a compendium of spells for any situation you may face and much more. Casting spells was what most of the chatroom questions were about. So sit back and enjoy the show, and as always, Blessed Be.

102. Judika Illes in “Encyclopædia Magicka” // Intellectual Archæology, Spellcraft, Tarot & Occult Detective Fiction

If you’re like me and you’re a fan of short stories, detective fiction and the occult, then a book like The Weiser Book of Occult Detectives is something you rush to pick up at the old brick-and-mortar. So imagine my delight when that exact book arrived unexpectedly on my doorstep one day. And imagine my further delight to see Judika Illes’ name on the front cover. Because, even if you’re not that into the occult, if you don’t know much about the people who write in this genre, Judika’s name is one you’ve seen if you’ve wandered through any bookstore. Sadly, if you’re wandering through one of those chain bookstores, her books are typically lumped into the New Age section and relegated to a dimly lit corner. But any curious bookworm will have undoubtedly seen her name at the bottom of a spine on those shelves, and that is exactly how this curious bookworm first learned the name of Judika llles. Judika is, of course, a prolific scholar, educator and author of several books of folklore, folkways, and mythology about the subjects of magic, the occult, divination, diverse spiritual traditions, witchcraft, and the paranormal. I originally reached out to her to discuss The Weiser Book of Occult Detectives, but as it turned out, that was only a drop in the old cauldron, because this chat took us in all kinds of directions. You might say it turned out to be a bit encyclopedic itself, because we wandered through many pages of the occult encyclopedia, and I think you will dig each and every one of them.
