S3 E2 Words in a Time of Lockdown: Clare Owen and Sophie Aldred
The Writers‘ Block Cornwall
In episode two, I have the pleasure of two guests: Cornwall-based writer, actor and facilitator Clare Owen who has recently released her first book, Zed and the Cormorants, and voice artist, actor, and once-upon-a-time TV presenter Sophie Aldred who is most famous for her role as Ace in Dr. Who and is the reader for the audio book of Zed. We spoke about crossing artistic modalities, the part nature plays in creativity, and the theme of mental health that flows as an undercurrent through Clare's book. Zed and the cormorant is available to buy or can be ordered at all bookshops. Music, sound production and editing by South West Sonic https://a-m-p.co.uk/v
As Doctor Who drew to a close in the late 1980s, one of it's redeeming qualities was Ace, a streetwise kid from Perivale who could take down Daleks and Cybermen with no fear. Today I speak to the person who brought this wonderful character to life, Sophie Aldred. We discuss her time on the show as well as her connection to the wider whoniverse.Go and check out her website! The Sophie Aldred Lost Tapes Interview Episode
Good Things Geek
An age ago, the Book and Tom worked on another (alas no longer published) podcast; Board Game Knights (it was about boardgames... get it). At the last UK Games Expo before the Global Pandemic the podcast went on tour and interviewed some cool guests. So, in honour of what we hope will be our post-Covid-19 visit to the 2021 UK Games Expo, we wanted to bring back some of the best interviews starting with...In this weeks episode we talk to Sophie Aldred. Listen in.
Martyn is joined by Sophie Aldred, they talk about the paperback release of her Doctor Who book 'At Childhood's End'. Past, present and future collide as the Thirteenth Doctor meets classic Doctor Who companion Ace – in the first epic novel from the woman who played her, Sophie Aldred. Once, a girl called Ace travelled the universe with the Doctor – until, in the wake of a terrible tragedy they parted company. Decades later, she is known as Dorothy McShane, the reclusive millionaire philanthropist who heads global organisation A Charitable Earth. And Dorothy is haunted by terrible nightmares, vivid dreams that begin just as scores of young runaways are vanishing from the dark alleyways of London. Could the disappearances be linked to sightings of sinister creatures lurking in the city shadows? Why has an alien satellite entered a secret orbit around the Moon? Investigating the satellite with Ryan, Graham and Yaz, the Doctor is thrown together with Ace once more. Together they must unravel a malevolent plot that will cost thousands of lives. But can the Doctor atone for her past incarnation’s behaviour – and how much must Ace sacrifice to win victory not only for herself but for the Earth? The podcast is available from all good podcast services, such as but not limited to Spotify, Amazon Music, Podchaser, Player FM, Stitcher, and Apple Podcasts. We also have a Smartlink.
