49 - Drew Cohen

The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Drew Cohen is a lawyer that works in theatrical licensing who in the President of Music Theatre International, having previously worked as a lawyer with the firm Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld; and as the General Manager of GlassNote Records. Music Theatre International (MTI) is one of the world's leading theatrical licensing agencies, granting schools as well as amateur and professional theatres from around the world the rights to perform the largest selection of great musicals from Broadway and beyond. Since the licensing industry isn’t one that gets talked about a lot, I was thrilled that Drew invited me into his office for this candid talk on everything from: Can a show get licensed if it is never produced in New York City? What do high schools look for when choosing a show to do? How has technology changed licensing? When should the rights to a show be released . . . after a show closes or (GASP) before? What you can do to get your show licensed by a company like MTI. One of Drew’s greatest assets is that he loves the theater, but he didn’t grow up in it. So he tackles it with the same passion we all have, but he’s got a pure business background. That’s good for all of us, since he’s distributing content to our future actors, authors . . . and audience. The more he distributes today, the healthier Broadway will be tomorrow. [Drew Cohen] In which we dive into an independent book store owner's head

Bleeding Ink

Welcome to the inaugural episode of Bleeding Ink! What better way to kick off this show than interviewing a pivotal figure in an author’s life: the bookseller. I first met Drew Cohen at The Writer’s Block—he stumbled upon my whirling a dervish among sections of Nobokov and Campbell. I’ll never forget how he gaped at me and arched his eyebrows as I gripped his shoulders amidst a flurry of thrashing bounces while I squealed: “Finally! A bonafide and heart-warming independent bookstore in Las Vegas!” It’s a wonder he allowed me to stay in his store after I hoisted him off the floor. I settled down and asked Drew for the latest gravy on literature. His response instilled in me a great confidence that this evil city had acquired a most sparkly gem. There was a lot of “You like Nabokov? He’s one of my favorites, have you read his lectures?” and “Greywolf Press is an imprint we carry a lot of, have you seen this release?” and “I’m from New York and I grew up around books. I always wanted to open a bookstore, why not here?” I bought as many books as my wallet would permit. Drew accepted my offer to interview him as any humble gentleman would You see, it’s not just the phenomenal selection of books that affirms The Writer’s Block. It’s a warm nostalgia that coats your skin when you step foot in the store—a sense that books are alive, kicking, breathing and relevant. A dear selection of my childhood memories were committed in quaint, endearing bookstores and these bubbled delightfully into the forefront of my brain-stuff. Oh, they also have a nifty area dedicated to local events and writing workshops for kids. Drew accepted my offer to interview him as any humble gentleman would. He smiled and appeared genuinely delighted to set aside some precious time. For that I am thankful—Drew possesses a wealth of knowledge when it comes to buying books and this can help steer the indie author onto many more shelves. Snippets Why New York may not be the best place for new writers How independent bookstores help communities What type of books indie bookstores carry and why Who the ABA is and what they can do for authors Where independent bookstores buy their books and how to place your book there Why good cover design is critical to a book’s success How booksellers are blind to blurbs Whether you should make your book returnable or not How to place your book on consignment How imprints act as gatekeepers The way to setup book signings Finding compatible independent bookstores to create lasting partnerships What role large publisher play in self-publishing]]>
