Ep 61: Mike Cohen - A Heartfelt Story of Cancer Survivor Biking Across US

The Ultra Cycling Show

Mike Cohen has a heartfelt story to share with all of us after battling cancer for many years and most recently suffering from a heart attack. Mike's story is one of inspiration, resilience, and determination to live his life to the fullest and to give back to the world along the way. As a cancer survivor in 2012, Mike bicycled 3,168 miles across America from San Diego, California to Long Island to show what's possible even in the worst of life circumstances. Then after suffering from a heart attack and receiving a heart transplant from a man who died in active duty while serving in the US military, Mike was determined to meet his donor's family. So in 2019, Mike biked 1,426 miles from San Diego to Jacksonville, Florida. Life has never been quite the same for Mike since surviving cancer and receiving a new heart, but I think it's safe to say, it's all been for the better.  Mike is just 35 years old so there's still a lot of road ahead of him to continue telling his inspirational story. Let’s roll! 🚲💨--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ultracyclingshow/support

Mike Cohen - Long Distance Cyclist, Cancer Survivor and Heart Transplant Recipient

Adventure Audio

At age 18, Mike Cohen was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukaemia. A few years later, Mike won his battle with cancer, however as a result of all the radiation and chemotherapy treatments, his heart was damaged. In his early 30’s he suffered from a heart attack. Mike needed a heart transplant. On February 21, 2018, 32 year old James Mazzuchelli, a Navy flight surgeon, was killed in a helicopter training accident. Because of James’s selfless decision to donate his organs, he saved Mike’s life. The very next year, Mike cycled 1426 miles from San Diego, California to Jackson, Florida to meet James’s family. This is an absolutely amazing story, and we’re so grateful to Mike for sharing it with us.--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adventureaudio/support

35 | Cyclist and Heart Transplant Recipient Mike Cohen: An Incredible Journey

The Injured Athletes Club

From cancer to health. Back to the hospital with a heart attack—and home with a new heart. And finally, across the country on a bike, twice. Mike Cohen’s life has taken him to places he never could have imagined. In this week’s episode, the San Diego-based athlete—who calls himself a professional cyclist riding for a cause—takes us through some of the highs and lows of his travels. Through it all, he’s managed to stay positive yet realistic; set and achieve big goals; and honor those who have supported him. His story might differ some from that of the typical injured athlete we have on the show, but his mindset is relevant for coping with any setback. A huge thank you to Fluid Running H2GO, the only app-based deep-water running system in the world, for sponsoring this season of the Injured Athletes Club. CLICK HERE and use code IAC 30 to take $30 off the full system or the digital bundle.
