25: Rick Baker: Preserving Your Values as You Grow Your Window Treatment Business
Window Treatments for Profit with LuAnn Nigara
Today on Window Treatments for Profit: Welcome to Window Treatments for Profit. Most business owners crave more leads and more growth. But when your business grows fast, it comes with its own set of problems, many of which are harder to navigate than those early business struggles. One of the key problems that arises is how to maintain your commitment to the customer experience, your vision, and your core values, even in the face of fast growth. Rick Baker of Galaxy Draperies joins me to share how he preserved the mom-and-pop, personal touch legacy even as the business boomed. The Breakdown [1:00] Rick shares the story of how Galaxy Draperies was thrust into big business growth after starting with modest roots. [6:30] LuAnn and Rick discuss the difficult transition from owner/operator to owner/manager. [22:32] Rick and LuAnn talk about the importance of the people in your business and how they adopt your business values. [35:21] Rick shares the struggles that come with growing a team and the lessons he learned along the way. The Ah-ha Moments “I worked with Madeleine for a time and one of the first things she said to me is ‘Rick, we’ve got to go slow to go fast.’ I looked at her like she was out of her mind. I was growing so fast, I could not pump the brakes. I was really frustrated with that comment, but she was absolutely right. I had to build the processes throughout the company to be able to do the things that we were doing.” -Rick Baker “You really are an intentional owner who values the people and knows that it’s all of you together who does it.” -LuAnn Nigara “We have morphed into more than a window covering company. Now we’re really a recruiting, hiring, and training company. We pride ourselves on our training program we run for our employees—The Galaxy Way.” -Rick Baker More about Rick Baker: Rick Baker is the CEO and Visionary of Galaxy Draperies, which has been in business in the Greater Los Angeles area since 1976 when his mother Muriel founded it. Quarterly Check in with President & CEO Rick Baker
Back to Business
It's hard to believe it's already April! The year is already a quarter of the way done. At our Annual Meeting in February, we presented an economic forecast from the Seidman College of Business. The big takeaways were that Grand Rapids was on a growth trajectory, with the biggest issue in the region being talent. We had a chance to sit down with Rick Baker, the Chamber's President & CEO, to hear what he is seeing in his interactions with the Grand Rapids community, what he's excited for in 2022, and how he thinks our community is rebounding from the pandemic. This is an episode of the Back to Business podcast you won't want to miss.

Episode 6 - Video interview of Rick Baker, former two-term and highly-effective Mayor of St. Pete.
Art in da Burg
(Video found at Facebook.com/burgbulletin). This was a very pleasant interview. We talked a little bit about his family, his playing the guitar, his books that he is so proud of, and the effectiveness which he gave the job of mayor of St. Petersburg Florida for two consecutive terms. He delves into what the factors were that allowed him to be so effective and successful. I really enjoyed getting to know him a little bit more. One of the things I learned most from this interview pertains to how we should think about these mayoral candidates. The trap that we find ourselves in a lot is when we pigeonhole candidates as liberal or conservative or Democrat or Republican. Rick says this is a mistake. At the mayoral level, political ideology takes a backseat to one’s love of city. So I’m going to take this under advisement as I think I make this mistake a lot myself. I think I’m gonna re-dedicate myself towards finding that person who loves St Petersburg as much as Rick Baker does. If we can find that person, it doesn’t matter what their political party is.
It’s Halloween in July as Gilbert and Frank celebrate the 90th anniversaries (1931-2021) of Universal Studios' original "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" by welcoming Oscar-winning makeup creator Rick Baker and author-historian David J. Skal for a fascinating conversation about sympathetic monsters, mad scientists (real and imagined), the origin of horror films, the genius of Jack Pierce and the premature deaths of Colin Clive, Dwight Frye and Lon Chaney. Also, David interviews Carla Laemmle, Rick turns Martin Landau into Bela Lugosi, Glenn Strange appears in Boris Karloff's obit and Bram Stoker's widow tries to kill off "Nosferatu." PLUS: Ghoulardi! "Man of a Thousand Faces"! The influence of Forrest J. Ackerman! Bette Davis (almost) plays the Bride of Frankenstein! And the boys (once again) try to make sense of "The Black Cat"!
