Good solid conversation with Judd Jones who lived right next door to Vic Henley and probably hung with Vic the most in recent years. Lots of great stories and reflecting. Feel sorry for Vic and the inevitable pigeon infestation. LM, Episode 153, 4/16/20, Thank you, Vic Henley My first set at Stand Up NY Comedy Club I followed a guy who was doing his first set. He was, obviously, half drunk, he’d not written anything, thinking he could just use profanity as a punch line. His closing was about the vile, sexual acts he wanted to do to each of the Golden Girls. I spent the first three of my seven minute set digging the audience out of the comedy hole he’d put them in. Walking off the stage, I run into the next comedian at the back of the room. He says, “Thank you for bringing them back from open mic night.” That comedian was Vic Henley, one of the funniest people I ever saw in a club. Vic was from Alabama and he said you don’t expect people with a southern accent to be that smart. You never expect them to say things like, “checkmate,” or “Alex, I’ll take Shakespeare for a thousand.” The next night a friend of mine calls to say she can’t make her set at Gotham Comedy Club. She knew I had not been able to get a set there and suggested I go tell the booker you can fill in for her. The booker is reluctant to let me up until I hear that Alabama accent of Vic’s behind me say, “Sean, he is very funny, I followed him last night.” Vic passed away unexpectedly last week and everything I have heard from other comedians, Vic personified the Golden Rule, helping many of us who could do absolutely nothing to reciprocate his kindness. The world will not be as funny or as kind of a place without Vic in it. Please do yourself a favor and watch Vic’s Comedy Central Special online. Vic never forgot that laughter matters.
We lost a great one. It’s an encore interview with the late Vic Henley, who passed away on April 6, 2020. The interview was originally conducted for Episode 175 of PF’s Tape Recorder. We repeat last week’s Dumb Bit, because it’s still relevant, and The Song of the Week is from Harry Styles. LINKS: Fangirl’s blog. Nearly Liza YouTube channel. Check it out!
