This week’s guest is Riya Karumanchi, a 17-year-old high school student from Burlington, Ontario. Riya is an entrepreneur and CEO of SmartCane and is extremely passionate about harnessing technology to better people’s lives.Riya shares her insight into overcoming the obstacles of being a young woman in tech, how women and girls can become engaged in technology at a younger age, and what direction tech companies should go, in order to become more welcoming to women in the industry.

From Zero to Startup with Riya Karumanchi

Riya Karumanchi took an idea she had from a chance encounter with her friend’s visually-impaired grandmother and turned it into a successful startup business with a promising career ahead. Riya is an avid ML developer and Innovator at The Knowledge Society. She is the founder and CEO of SmartCane, a company that is building an enhanced version of the common white cane for the visually impaired. She found it shocking that the white cane was never updated to take advantage of new technologies, so she decided to change it. The device leverages technology to increase independence and safety through GPS, object detection &amp; computer vision – gaining over $73,000 in funding and support from some of the world’s top companies like Microsoft, Google, TD, and DMZ. Her hard work and passion in her field have led her to be recognized as an innovative entrepreneur with a portfolio to match – and she is only 15. In this week’s episode, Riya is going to let us in on her unconventional path to unconventional success, and give us a look at what it’s like being a young entrepreneur in today’s growing technological world. In this episode we hear from Riya Karumanchi, who is an entrepreneur focused on harnessing technology to better people’s lives and making a positive impact on the world. From Riya: “I was just a “regular kid” until I was introduced to entrepreneurship at the age of 12 through an amazing organization called ZeroToStartup. Thanks to them, my first venture Smart Street Lights was born with the goal of making Toronto a more sustainable city. My team of Grade 7’s created a prototype featuring Motion Sensor &amp; Air Quality Data Streaming. Subsequent mentorship came from Ryerson’s DMZ and was made the youngest member of Social Venture Zone at Ryerson! My second venture SmartCane began as a science fair project. It is a modernized orientation and mobility device for the visually impaired and deafblind community. It won several awards at BASEF. I attended Hacking Health Hackathon to improve SmartCane. My team won the People’s Choice Award and I was offered an internship at MEDI
