[REPLAY] Annie Duke - Improving Decision Making [Capital Allocators, EP.39]

Capital Allocators – Inside the Institutional Investment Industry

Annie Duke is a renown public speaker and decision strategist. For two decades, she was one of the top poker players in the world, including winning a World Series of Poker bracelet and the $2 million winner-take-all WSOP Tournament of Champions. Her study of the science of smart decision-making began with a National Science Foundation Fellowship, which she used study Cognitive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania.  Among her charity work and television appearances, Annie was a runner-up to Joan Rivers on Celebrity Apprentice, during which she raised $700,000 for Refugees International. She is a natural teacher and storyteller with an active mind that constantly searches for accurate truth. I highly recommend Annie’s new book, Thinking in Bets, which comes out this week. In her life after poker, she is a featured speaker, writes a newsletter and a blog, and advises companies on improving their decision-making process. Have a look at her website, annieduke.com, for more information. Our conversation discusses Annie’s path from an Ivy League education to professional poker, the nature of a bet, how we form beliefs, why we make bad decisions, and what we can do to improve our decision-making process. Towards the end, we also talk about bankroll management, poker faces, and advice she would give the President on how to make better decisions. S3E24: When to Quit Your Climate Startup—w/ Annie Duke, author of Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away

Reversing Climate Change

We live in a culture that glamorizes grit and derides giving up. But in the world of climate startups, we can’t afford to spend time on projects that aren’t working. So, how do you know when to quit? Decision Strategist Annie Duke is a retired professional poker player and World Series of Poker bracelet holder. She is also the author of several books, including Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away. On this episode of Reversing Climate Change, Annie joins Ross to explain how to apply decision-making skills from poker and her research in the context of a climate startup. Annie walks us through her three strategies for deciding when to fold, challenging us to set explicit kill criteria and leverage the ‘monkeys and pedestals’ mental model to abandon projects that aren’t working. Listen in for Annie’s insight on prioritizing moonshots that develop useful technology and learn how to persevere when projects are worthwhile—and walk away when they’re not. The Best of Trending in Ed - Annie Duke on Thinking In Bets

Trending In Education

As part of our Best of Trending in Ed Series, we return to episode 202 of Trending in Ed from the Summer of 2019 where Mike Palmer interviews Annie Duke about her book, Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When We Don't Have All The Facts. We’re “all-in” this week, as we welcome Annie Duke, author of Thinking In Bets and retired poker pro, to the show. Annie begins by sharing the long, winding path she took to become an author and expert in decision science. From her time as a PhD student in cognitive science to her introduction to poker as a novice to her inspiration to write her books, Annie provides great detail on all of the influences throughout her life that have come together to write Thinking In Bets. We also dive into the non-profit, The Alliance for Decision Education, that Annie co-founded in 2012 and discuss how she hopes to push decision education at scale to millions of students in K12. How do we get decision-making wrong? How often do we worry about the result, see Pete Carroll’s play-calling in Super Bowl XLIX, rather than the process that led to the decision? If we were to teach students the basics of good decision-making, how might this improve their ability to decide quickly and adapt to a variety of environments and novel contexts critical to learning and the future of work? We discuss all that and more. So pull up a seat, ante up, and join us for an engaging conversation from back in the simpler days of 2019! Subscribe to Trending in Ed wherever you get your podcasts. Visit us at TrendinginEd.com for more sharp takes on the future of learning.

The Game of Risk: Poker with Annie Duke

No Turning Back

Poker is a game of risk. The chances you take, the bets you make, determine the loss, or the reward. It’s a heated calculus of quick decision-making, gut instinct, and strategy. This week, on the second episode of the Risk mini-series on No Turning Back, Stan and Chris speak to Annie Duke, a former professional poker player whose titles include the NBC National Poker Heads-Up Championship, as the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions.   In today’s discussion, Stan and Chris speak to Annie about why most people don’t think probabilistically when making decisions, why uncertain decisions are often most impactful, and why no good decisions ever come from consensus. She speaks to the power of a pre-mortem to think through ways a plan can fail before it does, and discusses how poker players not only think about winning, but winning the most they absolutely can (even if it means taking on more risk). She brings an academic focus, and intense inquisitiveness, to the game, and her lessons and tactics about risk transcend poker.
