Gary Gulman's Trader Joe's

Play
Read more

In this rerun, host Jesse David Fox sits down with Gary Gulman to talk about a joke from his 2016 special It’s About Time.

The joke is about an experience Gary had at Trader Joe’s, but it’s way, waaaaaaaay bigger than that. Gary takes his audience through TJ’s snack selection and into Narnia, making companions of old women on the Upper West Side, finally culminating in a rumination on the nature of New Yorkers and taking a stand when injustice rears its ugly head.

Jesse and Gary dissect this joke from start to finish, picking apart word choice down to the syllable. Gary reflects on the inciting incident, as well as how his mental illness plays a part in the whole thing.

You can watch The Great Depresh Tour on HBO Max. For all of Gary’s tips, follow Gary on Twitter. Follow Jesse David Fox on Twitter and Instagram.

45 minutes of exquisite extra content, available exclusively to members of the Insiders Club, includes Gary on his extensive writing tips for comics and why it’s impossible to use up creativity, and some behind the scenes secrets on his experiences doing spots on Conan.

Gary Gulman: This Impossible Life

Play
Read more
In this episode of the 18Forty Podcast, David sits down with Gary Gulman, a world-famous comedian with comedy specials on Netflix and HBO, to talk about the relationship between comedy and the art of living.

Gary grew up with a close relationship to God and was deeply depressed as a child. He thought he would be happy if he mastered something, so he resolved to become a good basketball player, then a successful accountant. But a change in perspective led him to try comedy, and he has since felt much more fulfilled. How does one construct meaning in their life? Does comedy help construct meaning or have any other value? Can one feel fulfilled if they feel average, or does one have to excel to be happy? And how does Gary’s Jewish identity play into his life philosophy?

Tune in to hear Gary reflect on his comedic journey and the role it has played in finding meaning in his life.

Boston Roots & Baseball Cards With Gary Gulman

Play

In what will surely go down as one of the shortest PosCasts in recent memory, hosts Joe Posnanski & Michael Schur say hello to comedian, Gary Gulman!

Joe taps into Mike and Gary's Boston roots to talk about the town's many sports heroes and who they think is the most popular. Michael takes issue with the traditional end-of-game baseball celebration. Hear his fix for a situation that always seems to confuse the two guys that it most frequently involves.

The trio takes a walk down memory lane to talk about their earliest memories from collecting baseball cards and how that evolved into playing Strat-O-Matic Baseball at a later age. All this in more in a brisk 68-minute episode!

The PosCast with Joe Posnanski and Michael Schur regularly posts new episodes of meaninglessness each week. To ensure you never miss an episode, subscribe to the show in The Athletic App or wherever you get your podcasts!
