Daniel Johnston enveloppe des mélodies extraordinaires dans une maladresse touchante, et il distribue ses cassettes au McDonald’s. Mais il n’a pas cherché à intellectualiser sa démarche lo-fi, c’est un enthousiaste qui a juste enregistré avec ce qu’il avait sous la main, comme quand on est adolescent et qu’on bricole de grands projets avec des bouts de ficelle.Daniel Johnston, c’est les années teenagers prolongées pour toujours, la pop culture constamment digérée de la façon naïve que nous on n’a vécu qu’une seule fois, le jour où on l’a découverte avec émerveillement. Il a la pureté premier degré d’un enfant, mais d’un autre côté il frappe son manager avec une barre à mine, et il balance une dame par la fenêtre parce qu’il pense que c’est Satan. Voilà le truc.

We are BACK IN ACTION with Season 2.  This time it is two documentaries about musicians.  Weird content for us but I think it turned out pretty good.  We are playing with the format here.  I think if we didn't, then this one would be somehow even longer.  After editing for far too long, I decided to accept the run time.  Episodes in the future will be a bit shorter however.  Also you may notice this one is a bit earlier than expected.  I am bad at counting. Noah talks to curator Robin K Williams about the exhibition Daniel Johnston: I Live My Broken Dreams, organized by The Contemporary Austin, Daniel Johnston: I Live My Broken Dreams is the first-ever museum survey of works by the visionary musician and visual artist Daniel Johnston (1961 – 2019). Best known for his music, Johnston was also an accomplished artist who exhibited his comic-inspired drawings during his lifetime. Yet, apart from his iconic “Hi, How Are You?” mural, painted in Austin in 1993, his abundant visual art remains little-known to most audiences. This exhibition will provide a rich presentation of Johnston’s work across disciplines, enabling visitors to explore the intricate connections between his prolific corpus of music and visual art. In addition to a selection of Johnston’s drawings and paintings, the presentation will include the artist’s home-recorded music and movies, as well as documentary footage of him rehearsing and performing. This exhibition is conceived by Heather Pesanti and Robin K. Williams and organized by Robin K. Williams in close collaboration with The Daniel Johnston Trust.
