Episode 477: Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu

On today's episode I talk to musician Jamie Stewart. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Jamie played in a number of bands as a teenager, including a parody band and a Bauhaus cover group. However, he didn't really find his voice until he formed Xiu Xiu in his mid-20s. The  release of the band's first album Knife Play on the Kill Rock Stars imprint 5RC cemented their style, but it was with 2004's Fabulous Muscles that the band really started to break through. Since then, Xiu Xiu has recorded and released another nine albums, toured the world, and their latest album Oh No, was just released at the end of March on Polyvinyl! Sharon Van Etten with Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu)

Talkhouse Podcast

Sharon van Etten and Jamie Stewart met a few years ago, when producer John Congleton recommended the Xiu Xiu frontman as a contributor to the singer-songwriter's 2019 album, Remind Me Tomorrow. Though their music isn't super similar sounding, each traffics in a kind of emotional honesty that's difficult to pull off but incredibly rewarding. Van Etten contributed vocals to the song "Sad Mezcalita" on Xiu Xiu's new all-duets album, OH NO, and the two chat about that collaboration here, along with the creative process, being open in their songwriting, and much more. This episode was produced by Melissa Kaplan. The Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range.

61 Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu) at Alternative Library in Bellingham, WA (5/24/19)

Worst Show Ever

Guest Jamie Stewart Girl With Basket Of Fruit Xiu Xiu frontman Jamie Stewart tells the story of their worst tour ever. But his approach to this common theme is unique in how, on the one hand, he labels himself an asshole and takes full responsibility for how terribly he treated his tour-mates (Tune-Yards). On the other hand, he makes a compelling case for having the moral high ground in this dispute, despite acknowledging how shitty he treated them. I was absolutely fascinated by what I could only call Jamie’s political insight into appropriative music, and equally pleased by his unabashed dickish behavior, as it was clearly coming from a place of conscience. I can’t think of the last time I’ve so appreciated someone attacking music and musicians I love and have loved.

Jamie Stewart on Otis Redding's "The Very Best of Otis Redding" (1992)

Heat Rocks

The Album: Otis Redding The Very Best of Otis Redding (1992) Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart is the son of a record producer and session player who blessed him with the gift of The Very Best of Otis Redding, the 1992 compilation of sixteen of the best songs from the late Otis Redding's catalogue. His father gave him instructions for listening - the charge to learn all about feel. We talked about the nuances of jabs and riffs and Otis Redding's pathos, his restraint, Otis' use of "uncool words" his penchant for the word "lovely", and his wonderfully nuanced cover of the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction". We discussed the sound Memphis music - Stax/Volt, the musicianship, the organic country friend soul sound of the label, and how that sound benefitted Otis Redding. What Jamie Stewart learned most from Otis Redding was awareness, how beats affect emotion, awareness of feel and how rhythm and emotion impact singing. It was a great conversation about a career and a life interrupted. Xiu Xiu's newest album Girl with Basket of Fruit, releases 02/08/2019 via Polyvinyl. Check out the music video for their newest single Scisssssssors. Editor's note: Xiu Xiu was formed in San Jose, but the band is now LA-based.
