But a lot of the products we see on supermarket shelves are not what they seem. Many companies are marketing their plant-based alternatives as ‘healthy’ while they're riddled with sketchy ingredients from behind the scenes. They're not just looking to sell their products; they're looking to make sure they have a stake in the future of our diets.   That’s why, being ‘plant-based’ isn’t good enough anymore. As smart consumers, we want more than just an edible thing— we want meaning behind our food. We want ethics and philosophy, we want sustainability, animal welfare, and transparency.   This is the inspiration behind Brooke’s Good Mylk Co. Brooke Harris turned into plant-based diet to improve her health. Later did she realize that these products made her even sicker. So she decided it was time for her to make something that she will be confident taking in. The CommonPod Queens Podcast has a Special Series, working with the Commonpoint Queens Ladders for Leaders (L4L) youth employment program! Throughout the Internships with Impact Podcast, we will be discussing the experiences of the ambitious students who participated in our program and the amazing employers we have partnered with. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ladders for Leaders program was cancelled in 2020, leaving over 500 NYC students without a summer internship. Through a generous donation from one of our employer partners, Cord Meyer Development, we were able to place 12 students in subsidized internships. This week, we spoke with Brooke Harris, another one of our Ladders for Leaders veterans who was one of the Cord Meyer funded students. With this donation, Brooke had the opportunity to intern with Urban Green Council during the summer of 2020. Prior to this, she interned with the ABM Agency in 2019 through the program. Both internships helped her realize she wanted to enter the marketing field. Brooke decided to turn to an alternative, plant-based diet as a form of healing medicine.   But to her surprise, she found her effort to ‘eat healthier’ was actually making her sicker. Through research, Brooke found that many of the binders, thickeners, emulsifiers and preservatives in otherwise “healthy” food were unnecessary and unhealthy.
