She has written 4 books, including,13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do, 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t Do, 13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don’t Do, and 13 Things Strong Kids Do. Lies Our Brain Tells Us w/ Amy Morin

Almost Adulting with Violet Benson

When going through a tough time the most annoying thing in the world is everyone seems to have all the advice on what you “should” do, right? Well you’re not alone, but the reality is that sometimes these things recommended to us are actually things we should be doing - but before we can even fathom doing them, we have to drop our bad habits. Besties, welcome Amy Morin to Almost Adulting! Amy is a licensed clinical social worker, college psychology instructor and psychotherapist, and responsible for one of the most popular Ted Talks of all time. Today Violet and Amy start the conversation by unpacking the often stressful topic of habits - how we form them, stick to them, and what we can do when we accidentally break our positive habits. The duo dives into what our bad habits say about us, and the importance of breaking them in order to create good ones. Through this, Amy teaches that mental strength and mental health are actually two entirely different things, and how the lies that our brain tells us affect us on a much deeper level than we realize. Finally, the ladies discuss a topic that life never prepares us for: grief.  Though grief is something no one can avoid, it’s never something anyone is ready for. Through Amy telling her story she learned coping mechanisms that truly changed her life, and that EVERYTHING always relates back to one thing…habits. Whether it be maintaining good ones, or breaking bad ones, habits can be HARD, so give each other grace and tune in to discover the tools you didn’t know you needed. THIS WEEK’S PODCAST IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY:TalkspaceTo match with a licensed therapist today, go to Talkspace.com. How to Talk about the 13 Things Mentally Strong Women and Girls Don’t Do with Amy Morin, LCSW – ReRelease

How to Talk to Kids About Anything

In the wake of the very public emergence of the #MeToo, #TimesUp and #girlstoo movements, the latter that we discussed with our Girls Inc Team, Lara Kaufmann and Dr. Christina Spears, a few weeks back-- women and girls have encouraged to find their voice, claim their power, come out of the shadows and not back down. But with a history of messages that tell women and girls that they need to be perfect, they shouldn’t break the rules, they should be quiet and look pretty, take a backseat and downplay their own success to avoid making others feel uncomfortable or be seen as “full of herself,” it’s a challenge for many to reinvent what it means to be a woman in 2019. It takes mental strength. We must build mental muscle and get out of our own way if we are going to change along with these important empowerment movements. How does mental strength in women make a difference? What areas, specifically, should we work on? And how does embracing and practicing mental strength as women translate to encouraging mental strength in the girls we love, teach and guide? For these questions and more, we will be interviewing the fabulous Amy Morin, for the 3rd time in the history of the show.
